Today's Featured Biography

Darrel Young

Mine has been a rather non-linear life.
(Want to put a smile on God's face? Tell God your plans.)

About to graduate from Southwestern University in 1961 and head to UT Law School, I heard Kennedy's inaugural address and just had to ask not. Ended up in the very first Peace Corps group (Anyone want to shake the hand of the man who shook the hand of JFK in the White House?) and Colombia was wonderful on many levels. (Click link above.)

Spent the mid-60s as a State Dept. Rep. in a small provincial capital in Viet Nam, where the VC made frequent visits. While those were interesting times, some part of my being had become Latinized in the Andes, so I got myself a Ph.D. in Latin American Economics and spent some thirty years at UT/Austin teaching same.

Over the years, any pretext has served to go south. Family in tow, I spent a year in Lima in the mid-70s as a Fullbright Scholar, another in the early '80s as Dean of the Business School at Universidad de las Americas in Puebla, Mexico plus summers in Bolivia and Chile. During the '90s, as a result of numerous student-exchange trips, I was particularly well versed on which clubs in Monterrey were hot and which not.

Having pretty much finessed my way through life, I, along with Miss Southwestern of 1963, retired to the Hill Country in 2001, at which time I made a pact with the Devil not to get older, just better looking.

Lookin' forward to good times Sept. 19-21!
