After graduation, I went to John Abbott for two and a half years to pursue my dream of being a police officer. I applied to the RCMP, but didn't get accepted. I moved to Halifax in 1988 and went to Saint Mary's where I got involved with the student newspaper and discovered I loved journalism while getting my B.A. in political science. I got a job with the Daily News after my second year and worked there part-time while I finished my degree. I have been at the Daily News full-time since 1992 and have worked in news, business, and sports as a reporter and copy editor. I have also dabbled in photography.
Some highlights of working at the newspaper have been winning an Atlantic Journalism Award for coverage of the Westray mine disaster, covering a Memorial Cup hockey tournament, a world junior hockey tournament and interviewing Wayne Gretzky. These are the fun parts, but there are also many lowlights, such as covering fatal car accidents, murders, and working lots of late-night shifts.
I was married in 1992, but separated from my wife in 1997. My two kids (Luke and Neil) and I have formed a Brady Bunch with Charlotte, Jacob and Jeremy. We spend our summers enjoying Nova Scotia's natural beauty -- lakes, beaches and forests. (I could never move back to Montreal now!) Our winters are spent snowboarding and skiing (lots of snow is one thing I miss about Montreal) and taking tae kwon do; I, and three of the boys, take classes.
I stay in touch with John Gunnip, Ralph Gavin, Mike McLaughlin and Dan Arseneault. Dan and I were roommates for a while here in Halifax. I have exchanged e-mails with, but have yet to run into, the elusive Donna Bourque Singleton, the only classmate known to be living in Nova Scotia.
Since the 20-year reunion in 2005, Charlotte and I have bought a new house together to make more room for our growing family. We had four kids then, but none together, so we decided to do our part to keep up with China. It's sort of like The Brady Bunch meets Yours, Mine and Ours.
Went through a huge shock in February 2008 when The Daily News -- my employer of 15 years -- was shut down by parent company Transcontinental Inc. A sign of things to come for the newspaper industry. I didn't want to move away from Halifax, so after working briefly at CBC Radio on a casual basis, I landed my new job as a communications officer with the N.S. Department of Health. Basically, it's media/public relations.
