Susannah Sears Hendricks
Let me start by saying that there is a shocking number of alumni in Ottawa! What the freak went down there? I mean, I get the thing about wanting to move away. But to Awfulwa??? What happened?
Anyway, I'm certainly not one to talk. I've lived here twice--and now for a total of about six years. My peculiar path has been paved by Montreal, Toronto, Ottawa, Vancouver and then Ottawa again. Who knew?
Long and very boring story shorter...I attended John Abbott (and unlike many here, I adored it, believe it or not. For the love of oven mitts, where the heck else can you get a credit in 'archery'???). After that I graduated Ryerson University in broadcast journalism. Stayed in Toronto afterward for several more years. Worked as everything from media analyst to newspaper reporter to television anchor, plus a bunch of less exciting stuff along the way. Let's put it this way: I can mix a kick-ass cocktail or bounce you out of a bar if need be.
Met the absolute love of my life in June, 1996 (Click on that link for a blurry pic from the pre-reunion party). Married him a year to the day later. We were engaged after eight days of dating. Crazy, I know. But now it's over nine years married and counting, fingers crossed and all that. I love him more than ketchup loves potatoes (sorry, obligatory Stompin' Tom reference inserted to satisfy Can Con rules).
We ended up in Ottawa after he took a job here as a television news anchor. Finding myself at loose ends in a relatively strange city, I changed careers, and decided to take a shot at something I'd always wanted to do: Writing crossword puzzles. This may not come as a surprise to my friends in the 'UN' who might remember the quizzes and puzzles I'd make in class, instead of taking notes. I've been the cryptic crossword author at the Ottawa Citizen for the past five years. I also write for the paper in more 'quote-unquote' journalistic ways....hard news, features, book reviews--just about everything when they'll let me...lol. I have the greatest, kindest editors you could ask for.
No kids, and none planned....but we do have a big old cat called Pumpkin. We had to name him that. What else would you label a giant orange sphere o' feline?
All told, I am quite happy, and consider myself a very lucky gal.
I had such a wonderful time at our reunion evnts in June, and am very much looking forward to the next ones in five years. Thanks again to all who attended the Friday night party at my parents' place, and for making it such a success!
