Today's Featured Biography
Laura Korn Johnson
Eventually I graduated from Penn State with a degree in recreation therapy. (Yeah, if only some of you who partied through college had known you could actually get a degree in it!) Afterwhich I closed my eyes and put my finger on the map and ended up in Charleston, SC. In Charleston is where I met my husband, and just in time, as it is he - who re-read and corrected all my papers, and got me through grad school. I lured my husband up to AK with camping fishing trips in the summers. Next, we taught out in the Yu'pik Eskimo village of Nunapitchuk. Our only mode of transportation for 4 years was a snow machine and I can cook caribou in about as many ways as Forrest Gump knows shrimp. We had our first child, Lyle (named after Lyle Lovett), while in Nunapitchuk.
On our next adventure we bought a camper and lived in it for a year working as campground hosts at two state parks on the Carolina coast. Once the money ran out we sold our camper and truck and came to live in Achorage. Our second son, Guy, was born at this time (camperlife was not boring!)
My husband is now working as a Paramedic, hoping to get on with AFD and I have just begun some part-time work. We are in the midst of adopting a brother and sister from Guatemala. We went to visit them in October and hope to bring them home soon!
Reading through all of your bios has been fascinating. I've been impressed by the diversity of experiences and interests of fellow classmates. We are all very ordinary, but still very interesting freaks and geeks who have all suffered and grown from love and loss and hopefully learned from all of our most everyday experiences. I encourage all who haven't written in - to do so. Big Thanks go out to those classmates organizing our reunion! See you soon.
