Today's Featured Biography
Sandra Junge Isley
Born in Juneau, Alaska on a stormy night. Lights went out all over town so St. Ann's Hospital had to use generators for my birth at 5AM.
I was raised in Juneau with my older sister Beverly Carolyn by our parents Gordon Kenneth Junge and his wife Winnifred Elsie (Carlson)Junge. My father was the Chief of Police and Fire Chief during the war years and worked on Army transports between Seattle and Juneau during the war. He later worked for the Daily Alaska Empire as a linetypist, for the Alaska Fish and Game and then on the ferry Taku. My mother worked for the Draft Board and at the Legislature.
Upon graduation from JDH, I went to work as a stenographer at the Employment Security in Juneau.
I married Robert Hildre and we had three children. In 1967, we moved to Tuxekan Island where my husband was involved in building logging roads for Ketchikan Pulp Company. We moved to another camp at Exchange Cove on Prince of Wales Island a few years later and then in 1970 I moved into Ketchikan with my children so that they could attend high school. In 1974, I began my long career with the Ketchikan Gateway Borough in the collection of City and Borough taxes as well as planning, zoning, airport, animal control and service area fees.
In 1976, Bob and I were divorced. Five years later, in 1981, I married Elzie and we have been together since.
I worked my way up from Tax Clerk to Director of Revenue at the Borough over the years and retired in 1993 ending a twenty year employment there.
Soon after retiring, I took a retirement trip around the perimeter of the country on Amtrak, beginning in Seattle, to New York for seven days where daughter Leslie flew in from Santa Barbara and we saw all the shows. From there, I trained to Miami and then on to four days in New Orleans. After leaving there, we heading across the lower states to Santa Barbara before returning by train to Seattle.
In 1998, I flew to Finland with my Cousin Marie Darlin after I met a Finnish Bichon Breeder on the Internet and she helped me find my great-grandparents family in Kalajoki, Finland. Marie and I had a lovely time with the relatives, took a cruise into St. Petersburg and the Gota Canal Cruise across Sweden.
Over the years, my husband and I have acquired five dogs, four Bichons and one Westie, who we take with us in our motorhome when on trips.
We plan a trip to Juneau in 2004 for our 48th class reunion and the celebration of Juneau's 100th year.
We moved to Port Angeles from Ketchikan in 2000 and live between Port Angeles and Sequim in the eye of the rain shadow where we have less rain. We have a lovely view of the Strait of Juan de Fuca across to Victoria, B. C. and enjoy the freedom to travel and shop when we wish. My sister lives nearby in Port Ludlow so we get together often. "Just discovered your product today while trying to locate classmates ahead of our 50th reunion in 2020. The fact that you did this in a noncommercial manner in a world where everything has a price tag deserves recognition and respect, in my view.
Thank you and good luck in all your endeavors."
