James Painter

I joined the US Navy following graduation. Vacationed in Vietnam three times from 64-67. Saw twenty-seven countries before retiring in 1979. Married twice, had two children and adopted/raised four others. One a doctor and the rest just getting by. From the "Butter Will Not Melt in My Mouth" granddaughters to the "Tasmanian Devil On Steroids" grandsons, my grand children will not be the salvation of the world but I love all eight of them.

Following retirement from the Navy in 1979, I worked as a Combat System Engineer at the Naval Surface Warfare Center, Dahlgren, Va. I received my BS in Political Science from the University of New York in 1980.
Performed Nuclear Safety Certification for Ground and Sea Launched Cruise Missiles. Worked nineteen years for Northrop Grumman on the Navy's AEGIS Cruiser and Destroyer programs at Dahlgren. Tomahawk and the SM-3 Leap Interceptor, used to shoot down the failing satellite earlier this year were two of the missile programs I helped develop and certified for tactical use.
From 1975-1996 I was heavily involved in sports, nights and weekends. Officiated High School and College baseball, softball, football, and basketball in the mid Atlantic region. Played fast pitch softball until 1994. Pitched against Eddy Feigner , The King and His Court, five times and beat him once, 3-2, with a bunch of Marines from Quantico, Va. I was the only long-haired "Marine" there.
Divorced in 1999. Ex-wife, Sharon, is my best friend. Retired from Northrop in 2004 and currently live alone in Fort Myers,Fl except when Phyllis, friendly, comfortable "old Jewish woman/love of my life" comes over for
"church services" and "nude coffee" with this "old man"! Absolutely adore the woman!
I was raised Christian and Christ was not the Son-of-God in the Jewish faith. We never argue but gently discuss religion and politics over coffee. We agree, that one of us is wrong, and also conclude that we may both be wrong; since I'm convinced that man created God to avoid "mortality".
Birth and Death are the "book ends" of my life. Wasn't bad before I was born. Won't be bad after I die. I love "near-death" stories but believe at some point that the light will go out.
Dad died in 1999. Mother died in 2001. My brother, Butch,thinks she is the reason we are currently at war in Afghanistan and Iraq. Dad was a saint but mother was tough and Butch figured she had little chance of making the pearly gates. We buried her on 9/10/2001 and when the Devil checked his inventory of souls on 9/11 and she wasn't there, he was so mad he destroyed four planes filled with people and started a 500 year war between Muslims and Christians. I personally think Butch breathed too much Agent Orange in NAM!

For my mother, father, a sister (Pat) and a brother (Cecil), the light has gone out and I miss them! I have lived and loved without reservation. I am grateful and give thanks for the friends, family, classmates and loved ones who shared and so richly blessed my life. Looking forward to seeing all your wonderful, smiling faces again!
