Today's Featured Biography
Larry Morrison
After graduation at EHS, I attended college at Southern State and at the University of Arkansas. After the proverbial “cramming of four years of college into six years,” in 1964 I completed a B.A. in English with a minor in history at Southern State College. It is clear that this educational success was largely due to the fact that, in 1962, I married Patricia Ainsworth of Parkers Chapel, and we completed our degrees together. After completing teaching certification at SSC, in January 1966 I began teaching history and driver education at Harmony Grove near Camden. In 1965, Pat had begun teaching in the Camden public school system. In 1976 I completed an M.S.E. with an emphasis in history at Henderson State College in Arkadelphia, Arkansas.
I greatly enjoyed my years teaching at the junior high and high school level, but in the fall of 1978, I began teaching history at Southern Arkansas University Tech, Camden, a two-year affiliate of SAU Magnolia. It was here that I became involved in collecting, copying, printing, and publishing Ouachita County historical photographs. The original intent was to supply copied photographs to decorate offices and meeting rooms at SAU Tech, but the project expanded to include historical slide programs, which I presented in numerous classrooms about the county, in historical association meetings, and at community meetings. The crowning part of the project was the publication of the hard-back book Historical Ouachita County: A Photographic Collection, which was SAU Tech's contribution to the Arkansas Sesquicentennial celebration.
I also enjoyed researching and writing historical articles for the Ouachita County Historical Quarterly about the steamboat, stagecoach, and cotton gin history of Ouachita County and about local people of note. Another part of the pleasure I experienced with my involvement in local and state history was embodied in my involvement with the Ouachita County Historical Association and by my board membership with the Southwest Regional Archives at Old Washington and with the Arkansas Historical Association.
After thirty years teaching, Pat and I retired and moved to Siloam Springs, Arkansas. We are fortunate to have most of our immediate family in the area. We live near my 101-year-old mother, my two brothers, our two daughters, our two grandchildren, and my nephews and their families. Our frequent family gatherings are great occasions.
Upon moving to Siloam Springs, I wished to continue my involvement with historical matters, but I wanted a more hands-on experience. About ten years ago, I joined Tired Iron of the Ozarks, a regional Northwest Arkansas antique tractor and engine club. Having never lived on a farm or having been involved with tractors, it is a little remarkable that I now own seven antique tractors. All this is even more fulfilling since Pat enjoys the club almost as much as I do. We spend at least part of nearly every day involved with the club in some way. If we had known retirement would be so wonderful, we would have tried it even sooner.
Recently, I have enjoyed renewing contact with some of our EHS classmates. Pat and I are looking forward to seeing everyone in October.

"Just discovered your product today while trying to locate classmates ahead of our 50th reunion in 2020. The fact that you did this in a noncommercial manner in a world where everything has a price tag deserves recognition and respect, in my view.
Thank you and good luck in all your endeavors."
