Today's Featured Biography
Mr. Patrick Major III, Principal
REMEMBER WHEN IT WAS OMEGA HIGH SCHOOL?
GO EAGLES!!!
The school started in 1979...out on Olive Dr.
For me, it all started in San Diego where I taught for 6 years while getting my MA and Administrative credentials. Then I moved to Bakersfield for 8 years as principal of OHS before being promoted to Administrator of the entire K-12, BCLS. That's were I got my "experience" with and interest in elementary school!
What a great six years! We won a CIF Softball championship. We were accredited by the Western Association of Schools and Colleges (WASC.) The spiritual formation of students and families was my greatest blessing, all while being challenged to maintain a fully comprehensive and academically challenging program -- the small school, with a "big school feel."
The pain of seeing the pastor and church leaders shut down the school in 1986, is only matched with the pleasure of watching God work it all out and seeing the school continue as Bakersfield Community Christian High School and now Bakersfield Christian High.
I was so pleased to see all the students and staff placed in other Christian schools by the end of the summer of 1986.
The healing process for me and my family took place at North Kern Christian School in Wasco and at the Wasco Bible Church, during the next two years.
Then, I moved to Yucaipa, near San Bernardino, where I was Administrator of Yucaipa Christian School at First Baptist Yucaipa. We were there 12 years and added the junior high (which they have now dropped) to the K-6. During those years, I was on the national board of ACSI and also active on the accreditation commission, with some trips to Singapore, Philippines, India, Bangkok and Hong Kong, all related to Christian school education.
In 2000, I moved back to San Diego as the principal of Christian High School, where I had taught years ago, and found former students, Debbie Ocetnik Lennick on staff as one of my teachers! And where Ginny Roden Valles' boys attended. I soon realized that at my (old) age(!)what I had to offer was not what the high school needed, and not a good fit for me, so after 3 years, I was happy to find God leading to a K-6 school in Lakewood/Long Beach.
I've been at FBCOLS since 2003 and we've added a middle school (traditional rotating schedule/classrooms for two sections each of 6-7-8th grades.) We added the 7-8th to the existing 6th, and broke the new MS off from the K-5, so we now have a Preschool, Elementary and Middle School (check us out: www.fbcoles.org)
My family was always a priority with me.
Our kids were born in San Diego prior to going to Bakersfield. Matt was born the second week of teaching in San Diego. He's graduated from APU now, married to Kim and they have one boy (grandson #1 Vaughn Patrick) and one on the way. Matt has returned to San Diego and works for Taylor guitars in El Cajon as their I.T./software engineer/Supervisor.
Mindy Joy was born in San Diego too. She graduated from APU also and is a third grade teacher, married to Todd Putnam (no kids yet!)
We just got back from a 35th Anniversary cruise to Alaska! Its great to look back over the years...yes, even persevering through tough times in life. "Brothers, I do not consider myself to have taken hold...but...forgetting those things which are behind...I press toward the mark...!" Phil. 3:13
