Carey Suckstorff
One thing I miss about High School is the Tennis Team. I was also sadden the day I found out that Mr. Hans Olson died. He, along with Mrs. Santori (English) had a profound effect on my life. After Graduation, I enter the Marine Corps. To my regret, I turned down the opportunity to attend Annapolis for the start of the 1977 school year. My reasoning at the time was that after boot camp, which I completed at the end of November 1976, I would have been sent to a Prep School in Handover, Maryland for the remainder of the current school year. After graduating from Annapolis, I would have been obligated to serve a minimum of 10 years in the Marines, for a total 15 years, including boot camp and schooling. At the time, I did not want to make that commitment. So I spent the four years in the Marines, Starting out in Field Radio Communications. I served with Headquarters Company, 9th Comm Battalion, 1st Marine Division, Camp Pendleton, CA. From there, I went to Okinowa where I was assigned to Fox Battery, 2nd Battalion, 12th Marine Regiment, 3rd Marine Division. While with Fox Battery, I was afforded the opportunity to see various parts of mainland Japan, South Korea, the Philippines, Guam, Singapore, Hong Kong and a trip to Australia. While working with the artillery unit, I was part of an Forward Observation team for a while, liaison with 1/9 Infantry Battalion for artillery support, and various communications functions within the artillery unit. I was selected to attend Embarkation School and took over the embarkation duties for the Battery. This job consisted of planning the loading of the troops and equipment of the Battery aboard aircraft and ships for deployment. After leaving Okinowa, I was again sent to Camp Pendleton, where I was assigned to Headquarters Company. 1st Marine Regiment. Because of my experience as a Forward Observer for artillery, I was assigned to Air liaison, where I was a Forward Observer for Air Strike and would communicate directly with Air Force, Navy and Marine Pilots, guiding them on targets for bombing missions. The Embarkation Specialist for the Regiment was transferred over seas. As the only qualified Embarkation specialist in the Regiment, I was moved into the S4 and took over that position until my enlistment was up in August 1980. During that time I planned and over saw 2 sea deployments, and 2 aircraft deployments for the Regiment. I also prepared the Regiment for an IG inspection prior to the end of my enlistment. During my time in the Marine Corps, I received 3 Meritorious Masts and 2 letters of Accommodation. The day before my Separation from Active Service I was promoted to Sargent (E-5). From there I traded in one uniform for another and went to work as a Correctional Officer for California Department of Corrections, where I worked in two different prisons. Too many stories to tell about that experience. I am now retired and living in Florida
