Today's Featured Biography
Linda Frost Branam
I'm a senior technical editor for the notebook division at HP. ("Notebook" is what we call laptops, because they really aren't supposed to be used on laps, due to the vents being on the bottom. :-) )
I edit the manuals, posters, and other documentation that goes into the box for HP and Compaq notebook computers.
I've been doing technical editing only since 1997, when I was hired by Compaq on the strength of the writing and editing I had done in my five years with Harris County as a trainer of law enforcment and court personnel on the county's computer system. And I got THAT job on the strength of my elementary ed degree and the freelance writing I had done for the neighborhood section of the Houston Chronicle.
Technical editing is a perfect fit for my interests and aptitudes, although when I got the results of the aptitude test we took at Vanden our senior year, I wondered how the heck I got a high score in mechanical reasoning. And since I had no idea how I'd use that in the real world, I decided to major in English. :-)
But as it turns out, I use that reasoning in tech editing--I have to analyze diagrams, illustrations, and written procedures for mistakes and inconsistencies. I love getting to read about all the new stuff that's not yet on the market and seeing how it works. I love being in a position to help make the materials clear and well written. And it's a kick to catch the types of stuff that bug the heck out of me when I'M the user of something.
