Susan Crookshanks Sparks
It was the summer of 1966, I left GV and headed Northeast to Fargo, ND where I lived for 3 years at St. Luke's Hospital School of Nursing. I learned about nursing and freezing cold winters and about life in the midwest. If a snow storm knocks out the roads, the student nurses staff the hospital until roads open. Nursing students worked all shifts around their university schedule...(primary method of learning was: learn by doing). If you were lucky enough not to be on duty and a storm closed the University, which stopped the busses from running, you could be on a party on campus and plenty of creative ways to get there LOL. Fargo was a place where people just left their cars unlocked, motors running in winter, without a second thought. Being nearly frozen after 3 winters in Fargo, I returned to GV after graduation and in 1970 married a geologist working on the Auburn Dam Project. One of my first jobs was working in the OR at Miners Hospital in NC. We moved in 1975 to Gilroy after the Auburn Dam Project was shut down. I taught Lamaze and worked part-time in OB while we raised our 4 kids. I kept busy with 4-H projects, sports, and working hard to change backward hospital policies in OB. My husband, Dave played on a community softball team in Gilroy with Gary Degraffenreid (it really is a small world.) In 1987 we moved to Penryn where I worked in OB at Auburn Faith Community Hospital until I retired. Pam (McGregor) Thacker and I had lots of laughs when we worked in OB at Auburn Faith together. Dave and I enjoy the benefits of retirement: playing with our 4 grandchildren, then sending them home when we are tired, napping or reading a book when we feel like it, and trying to out-fox the deer who think we plant a garden for them.
