Today's Featured Biography
Ernie DeGraff
After leaving SRHS, I enrolled at Cal Berkeley. I graduated from Cal & Colo. St. Univ. in 1964 & '65 and, after the Army, started a career with the Forest Service on the Klamath NF. Then worked in recreation, wilderness, trails, and range management on the Mt. Whitney RD of the Inyo NF from 1969-1978. One year I spent 60 days in the saddle riding and packing mules on the district managing cattle allotments and backcountry trail crews and wilderness rangers. Started the wilderness permit program on the Mt. Whitney Trail, which later expanded to all forests in Calif. Married first wife in Lone Pine and enjoyed many weekends skiing at Mammoth Mtn. Probably the best 8 years of my career; certainly the most fun. Took the wife and kids for a week at a time with horses and mules checking the backcountry range allotments. Never regretted going to work during my entire career; every day brought something different.
In 1978 was promoted to the Inyo Forest headquarters in Bishop as the Asst. Recreation Officer for the Forest with major responsibilities in wilderness management planning and forest recreation. I headed an interdisciplinary team that wrote the first management plan for the Golden Trout Wilderness using the NEPA process. I was active in a wilderness management group that included folks from four forests (Inyo, Sequoia, Sierra, & Toiyabe) and two parks (Yosemite and Sequoia/Kings Canyon). A side benefit was being able to co-chair a panel on Wilderness Management Coordination at a national meeting in Minneapolis, MN celebrating the 25th anniversary of the signing of the Wilderness Act.
I met my current wife and two stepsons in Bishop, married in 1983, and retired in 1994 at age 54. Moved to Fortuna, CA in 1996. Enjoy golf, hiking, RV'ing, photography, church activities and grandkids. Long ago traded my trumpet for the 5-string banjo and church choir.

"Just discovered your product today while trying to locate classmates ahead of our 50th reunion in 2020. The fact that you did this in a noncommercial manner in a world where everything has a price tag deserves recognition and respect, in my view.
Thank you and good luck in all your endeavors."
