Today's Featured Biography
SANDY HOUCK ST.JOHN
After graduating from Samohi, I went to Santa Monica City College as a Theatre Arts Major. I married my late husband Dick (Unihi, 1960) in 1966 and began writing songs.
I've written many songs including the #1 country hit, "Sweet Country Woman" (recorded by Johnny Duncan and produced by Billy Sherrill.) My songs have been recorded by Cilla Black, Crystal Gayle, R. B. Greaves, Jan and Dean (a song I wrote with Jan), Sammy Johns, Vicky Lawrence, Loretta Lynn, Tommy Overstreet, Guy Mitchell, Johnny Paycheck, Mike Post, Sha Na Na (Johnny Contardo), Joey Scarbury, etc. I've also written songs for a number of television movies.
My late husband Dick started the singing duo "Dick and Dee Dee" in 1961 ("The Mountain's High" - which he wrote, "Thou Shalt Not Steal", etc.) and was totally and undeniably the talent (singing lead, falsetto, most harmony parts and writing 3 of the 5 hits) and driving force behind the act . . . and they completely and totally disliked each other.
Dick also wrote many songs that were recorded by his contemporaries of the day (The Four Preps, Jan and Dean, The Johnny Mann Singers, Lesley Gore, Donny Osmond, Donny and Marie Osmond, Quincy Jones, Frankie Valli (and The Four Seasons) - to name a few. He also co-wrote the #1 single "Yellow Balloon" and other songs on that album.
I joined Dick as part of his duo in September, 1969. We performed together continually in just about every state in the US (including a tour of Alaska) as well as doing shows in Canada and Puerto Rico until his accidental death in 2003 when he fell from a ladder at our home in Pacific Palisades, CA.
During the 70's, as well as touring, Dick and I were also part of The Ernie Freeman Singers. I was also an artist on MGM Records. I sang lead for Perry Botkin, Inc. - which was me singing lead backed by The Mike Curb Congregation.
I have also written several successful books, "The Rock and Roll Cookbook" and "The Country Music Cookbook."
I was recently contacted by a distant relative who was in the process of doing a genealogical research on my father's mother's side of the family. We E-mailed back and forth and he would keep me informed of the progress that he was making. While working on the project he discovered that Betty Grable is my third cousin! This thrilled me because I was a huge fan of hers when I was a little girl. I had Betty Grable paper dolls, a Betty Grable scrapbook, etc. So, it was pretty exciting to discover that I was actually related to her.
My hobby is collecting dollhouses and miniatures.
