Today's Featured Biography
Richard Novak
After graduation that summer, I went to Metro to start an aviation career, however, no one told me I had to submit my own draft student deferral and therefore, I ended up in the Navy as an air traffic controller in Texas and then Guantanamo Bay Cuba. While in the Navy I continued on with aviation training, finally getting a flight instructor certificate in May of 1973.
After leaving GTMO and the Navy, I got married in 1975 and moved to the Navajo indian reservation teaching doctors to fly and flying Navajo and Zuni indians to doctor appointments in El Paso, Phoenix , Salt Lake and Denver. I also flew air ambulance thoughout the reservation.
That is something I hope I never have to do again.
After a year or two, I thought the FAA might have an in to the good flying jobs so I went to work for them as an air controller in Roswell, New Mexico. Hated it....just hated it.
A year to the day, I quit. Moved to Kansas for a charter flying job. Learned a lot, got scared once or twice, and saw a lot of old grass country landing strips.
In 1980, I went to work for Air Midwest flying turbo prop aircraft all over the Midwest. Learned even more...
I became the chief pilot in 1990 but sitting in office just wasn't my thing (as a matter of fact, neither was sitting in school) so I resigned in 1996 and went to work for Vanguard airlines. Loved it. Best place to work EVER!!!!
When they went broke in 2002 (the day the music died), I layed around for 6 months waiting for them to arise again then moved on to a company called Casino Express out of Elko Nevada, Memphis and Atlantic City. We flew weekend gamblers from throughout the midwest to various casinos for gambling junkets.
Six months later an old friend of mine called and wanted to know if I'd be interested starting up an MD80 program for a company called Trans Meridian Airlines. Well...hell yes!!!
We flew vacationers to Forida and all over the Carribean. I was based in Florida but picked up the folks in Chicago, Salt Lake, Toledo, St Louis and Harrisburg. I fell in love with the Carribean. Wish I could move there.
Well....they went broke.
Out of chance I sent a resume to an outfit called Ryan International Airlines and ..WHAM
they need a check airman for they're new MD80 program so now..that's where I am.
I am currently the program manager for the MD80 fleet. The company is officially based in Rockford Illinois but I spend most of my time between Miami teaching Ground school and simulator then San Antonio teaching the finer points of operating the aircraft.
Most of our trips go to different countries in Centra America, with Cuba on the weekends.
Still get to visit a few cities in the U.S. but mostly, Central America.
When I'm not galvanting all over the country, I still have time to play drums in a band here in Kansas. Yup!! The old stuff, just like I used in Denver at the BAJA and Bachinal. What a trip. I guess I never want to get old!!!
Enough for now, I'm rambling and Mr.Burdick would have none of it. Until then, second star to the right, and straight on till morning
