Garry Hodgson

Update, living in Fernandina Beach Florida, on Amelia Island. Loving it!!!

The task... to fit 35 years into a Readers Digest version of my life!

After graduation I joined the Navy and completed boot camp and my 'A' School before my 18th birthday... thinking I had to be one of the youngest in our class. I recall that Don Roth was a couple of days younger.

I was stationed in San Diego and on Midway Island and was discharged in 1975 at the end of my tour. During this time I married my high school sweetheart (she just didn't go to our school, she went to Ranum). We immediately divorced after I returned to Colorado. The grounds being immaturity (Ya think?!?!?)but we remain good friends to this day.

I went to work as a trainman (conductor/brakeman) for the Burlington Northern RR where I worked until 1984. I married again with the result being two darling little girls. Following that divorce (the grounds being that I had an eye problem.... I just couldn't see myself not getting high!), I returned to school and received an AAS in Human Services from Denver Auraria Community College in 1985. I continued my studies at Metropolitan State College where I received a Bachelor of Social Work degree, followed by graduate school at CSU and my MPA from CU Denver.

One of the great joys of this time was running into Inez Smith at a conference. She was astonished to see what I had done with my life and doing what I was doing for a career(I think she suggested breaking rocks as a career goal when she was my guidance counselor). She invited me back to NGHS to sit in with her on group sessions with students who had recently been through treatment for their addictions. Who would of thought... from the parking lot "doing those things" to counselor, working with students who were "doing those things"!

I worked for a community based treatment program in the Lincoln Park projects, then on to Lutheran Medical Services followed by Centennial Peaks Hospital in Louisville (perhaps some of you are familiar with it?!?). On to marriage number three and another great joy in my life, Shannon who will be 19 next month (and will be visiting me here in Seattle next week!!!). When she was born we made the decision that I would be her primary care-taker and at that time I began working for myself. Did I mention.... another divorce? The grounds this time being "What was I thinking?!?!?".

In 1993 I went into private practice in Aurora treating domestic violence offenders and the chemically dependant. In 2000 I returned to school at CU Denver and completed a Master of Public Affairs degree with a focus on domestic violence public policy and law.

Enter wife number four.... (Romantic or a fool? You be the judge!) and in 2004 after far too many years of clinical work I closed the agency and moved to Washington her home state. I took a job with the Washington Department of Veteran Affairs in Seattle, managing programs statewide that provide services to incarcerated and homeless Veterans. Extremely fulfilling work! I spend much of my time on the road, however I office in historic Pioneer Square, just off of the original "Skid Row". By the way, somewhere in here there was another divorce, grounds this time? "What was I thinking?" revisited.

I've lived in the north area of Denver much of the time, owning two homes in the Westminster area, one in Northglenn and one in the old Berkley Park area of north Denver. In 1994 I bought a place in the high country (9,000 ft.) in the Brook Forest area of Clear Creek County where I lived until moving to Washington. I bought a 100 year old house in Everett Washington and refurbished a great deal of it and I currently live in Mukilteo a stones throw from the beach and overlooking Puget Sound where I enjoy wonderful sunsets each evening except when it's raining..... which seems to be an awful lot!

I've had my ass on a Harley for years and made it to Sturgis 23 years in a row and to Daytona Bike Week every other year. Spent a month above the Arctic Circle in Alaska a few years back and another month in Thailand three years ago. My next trip will be to the Phillipines where my brother Dennis (NGHS - 77) lives.

I moved back to Colorado last year and while it's good to be home, I can't say that I'm enjoying the Winter months.

The link is to a web page that, in all honesty, I haven't updated in some time. However in the 500+ photos, you may see some other faces you recognize from Northglenn as I had two sisters and two brothers follow me through NGHS.

Classmate Memorials

You will be Remembered

You will be remembered when the flowers bloom in spring
And in the summertime remembered
In the fun that summer brings

You will be remembered
When fall brings leaves of gold
In the wintertime, remembered, in the stories that are told

And you will be remembered, each day right from the start
For the memories that we once shared
Forever live within my heart
