Today's Featured Biography
Veronica Koehn
I have been busy with school since graduation (10 years now--yikes!). College, both as a student and as a professor, has been my life since leaving THS.
I got my BA in English Writing in 2001, but, following an internship with a small magazine, realized I did not want to write magazine articles for the rest of my life.
I opted to use my writing skills for a career in PR, and, under the advice of an advisor, decided to get an MA in Communication with a graduate certification in PR. In my first semester, I was required to facilitate/teach a day of class, and I fell in love with teaching college-level material. So, I changed my career path and decided to become a college professor.
That meant that, after I got my MA in Communication in December 2002, I was looking at more schooling for my Ph.D. I was accepted into the Ph.D. program in Human Communication at the University of Denver.
As I was starting my schooling at DU, I was hired as an adjunct instructor at Everest College, where I taught English Composition courses, Oral Communication courses, and several other classes.
In 2005, I was hired as an Adjunct Professor in Metro State's Communication Arts and Sciences department. I have taught the basics (Public Speaking, Interpersonal Communication), some Communication Theory courses (Gender and Communication, Intercultural Communication), and, for the past year, I have taught Rhetoric courses, which are my personal favorite as I am using rhetorical theory in my dissertation. I just started teaching Techniques of Persuasion for the third time; I have also taught Argumentation and Rhetorical Criticism.
Last fall, I was hired on as an Adjunct Instructor at Front Range Community College. I teach English Composition courses and Public Speaking.
Earlier this summer, I was honored to be offered an Adjunct Professor position at the Colorado School of Mines. I am going to be teaching two sections of their Nature and Human Values course, which is an interdisciplinary writing course. I am looking foward to this course because it has a focus on ethics and my dissertation deals with the rhetorical construction of ethics.
I finished my required courses at DU in November 2005, and I completed my comprehensive exams on December 31, 2005. I opted to take an additional course from January-March 2006 to help me in writing my dissertation, and it was during this course that I found out that I passed my comprehensive exams.
I am currently working on finishing up my dissertation, which is the final requirement for my Ph.D. I am writing about the rhetorical construction of morality and ethics in Bush's first term in office. I will be finished by next spring, at which point I will have my Ph.D.
