Today's Featured Biography
Eddie Mouton
Life
The eldest of my 5 siblings, and was by the time I was 6. My mother married a man with 6 MORE kids when I was 12! Went to schools in Louisiana, Georgia, Florida, Virginia & Ohio before returning to Brandon in '75. Left FL in '85, but make a pilgrimage once or twice a year ever since. I had always taken the easier & softer approach to life in general, pretty much took the Get-High Road, head-ing straight into active retirement immediately after High School! Enjoyed that while I was still young, foolish, & could absorb the pratfalls. Spent too much time in arrested development. ie. sometimes arrested, and other times in development!
Married MD Shirley Welch's daughter, Cindy, in Brandon in '84 and was blinded in my left eye following a near-fatal automobile wreck later that same year. Married Sherry Thomas in '93 and we had 2 daughters, Rebecca & Camille, now 15 & 13 respectively. They are a handful, but they're MY wondrous handful! Divorced now for several years; a single parent with sole custody.
Lost my best friend, business partner, & sister: Mignon (BHS '79), to a sudden illness in late '03. Life is what we make it, then we ask God to fix the mess! Have enjoyed re-establishing contact with old friends and acquaintences. Drop me a line!
College
Along with sobering up in Alcoholics Anonymous (now for 24 years+), I returned to higher education after spending/wasting too much time being "Higher Ed" as mentioned, in '88 and went straight through Jr. College (AA '91) graduating w/Presidential Honors, then to The University of New Orleans (BA '93). Undergrad at UNO was truly wonderful, having the chance to attend & experience college in the Big Easy. Won a scholarship to study abroad in Innsbruck, Austria in my senior year, and went back the entire following summer as an employee of the UNO Int'l Study Program before miraculously getting admitted to Law School in '93 at LSU in Baton Rouge (JD) with the help of some terrific friends with the necessary pull. They vouched for me despite my colorful past.
Law School proved to be the most challenging experience I'd ever encountered in life and was not nearly as much fun or as intellectually inspiring as I'd imagined! Over half the class was gone by graduation in '96. When finished with college + grad school (a total of 7 straight years later) I actually surfaced with a law degree! Did cinch the LA Bar Exam on the first try.
Though I miss the undergrad experience, I wouldn't brave another go at Law School! Still kicking around the idea of taking the Florida Bar Exam someday.
Workplace
Currently a Solo Practitioner for the past 14 years, Private Attorney in Shreveport, LA. Took a long & winding road to get here! Started off in the late 70's learning a trade: Printing. Made a good impression as a press operator & quick print shop manager in the business through my late 20's. Did a lot of this & that and was a bellman at a Captiva Island, FL resort (South Seas Plantations & Estates) for some time. Later, I landed a position at a local record store in Brandon, FL (The Record Factory) where I rose to Store Manager in no time. Flipped over my much loved Toyota Celica Supra in '84 and was sidelined for about a year, but then got my feet all wet managing my family's dive shop in Apollo Beach once I got back on 'em again. My MIL owned a motel in Maggie Valley, NC which my wife & I managed for a several years. Fate & circumstances then led me to New Orleans and I started a long road through college. After securing my JD, I hung my own shingle in '99 and have made a decent living as a General Practitioner ever since, following a 3 year stint slaving a'ways as a Public Defender. Actually, I loved it a la Atticus Finch, Matlock & Perry Mason; I've racked up a pretty solid reputation along the way. Until the next chapter unfolds, I'll just practice law until I get it right, One Day-and as many cases as I can-at a Time. Still excited every day when I get up to make the trek to the office, after dropping the kiddles off at school, natch! I truly love what I do and thank God & providence every day! He takes care of Fools & Drunks, and since I don't drink anymore. I guess I know what that makes me by elimination. Grateful that I still qualify!
