Today's Featured Biography
Patricia Pao Scully
I served in the United States Army during the Vietnam Conflict. Most of my tour was spent as a Physical Therapy Assistant at Ft. Sam Houston, Texas, where I aided therapists who treated the wounded from Vietnam as well as active duty servicemen, retired servicemen and their dependents. I was also stationed at Landstuhl, Germany and then Berlin for a total of three and a half years. As a servicewoman, I had the opportunity to visit places I read about as a high school and then college student: Harper's Ferry, Lincoln Memorial, the Alamo, Gettysburg, Arlington Cemetery, and The Berlin Wall. It was at the Berlin Wall that I understood what freedom really meant.
I received my AA in Liberal Arts from UH in 1987. Then I attended BYU-H where I graduated with a BA in TESL in l991.
Soon after graduating from BYU-H, my daughter Jenifer and I left for Jakarta, Indonesia. I taught English there for only one year. In Jakarta, Jenifer and I learned to speak Indonesian. We enjoyed studying and speaking Indonesian especially since we lived in an Indonesian community and wanted to communicate with Indonesians, most of whom did not speak any English. Then we went to a Christian school in Salatiga, Indonesia, where I taught English classes, tutored students individually and supervised reading and writing classes. In Salatiga, we also lived amongst Indonesians and we became more familiar with their culture. (During vacations we usually went to Bali and Singapore. During our last vacation in Hawaii, it was decided that Jenifer and I would not return to Indonesia due to the many riots in nearby towns.)
I have worked as a cashier at one of the gift shops in the Stratosphere Casino mainly because there was a feeling of ohana amongst us co-workers. The shop is just under the rides---the Big Shot, the X-Scream, and the Insanity.(The High Roller was taken down in December 2005.)
Since January 2005, I have become e-mailing friends with former KHS schoolmates, most of whom I have not seen since l963! I have also enjoyed visiting with former '63 classmates at The Main Street Buffet as well as at Makinos. In April 2007, I was at The Ohana Room at The Cal with the class of 1964, the class I graduated with. It was so good to have been a part of these celebrations.
I still enjoy being a cashier but now I am working for a local convenient store in the neighborhood that I have lived in for the last nine years. So I have an extended family with long-time friends and neighbors as well as numerous opportnities to meet new people.
Jenifer and Vii and my grandchildren(Moses, Leilani,Alii,David,Vii Jr.) are now living in Wahiawa.
