Steve Martens

I always appreciate being included on the class of '68 mailing list. (Thanks, friends.) I'm sorry to have lost contact with nearly all my old friends from STC, so I'm always glad to see your occasional updates. Even though I was a hopelessly nerdy kid in high school, I appreciate that everyone was especially nice to me.

I'm really happy to have retired in July 2016 after 29 years of college teaching at NDSU in Fargo. I miss the college kids and teaching architecture and historic preservation, but I'm finding lots of fun things I'm able to do in retirement.

My wife, JoAnna, and I have no kids, so we took on a retirement project renovating a 130-year old stone church in a little North Dakota town about the size of Chelsea. We enjoy spending time there getting together with friends. I'm also able to do quite a bit of architectural history research and writing. I guess life has been pretty good to me.

I left Tama-Toledo after junior year and graduated high school at a BIA School (White Shield) in North Dakota. I don't do Facebook but my sister Mitzi was nice enough to put me in contact with my old friend Larry Scharnweber.

I really do thank you for keeping in touch and I admire the effort so many of you have put into staying in contact and being supportive good friends to each other. Maybe perhaps our paths will cross again one of these days. Goodness, how is it possible we are coming up on our 50th year reunion?

I would truly welcome hearing from any of you by email if you think of me sometime. I have a couple of email addresses I use, so if you're ever thinking about that rotten Martens kid from years ago, I hope you'll drop me a note at
