Today's Featured Biography
Michael Goodson
Twenty years later and I the one thing that I’m still pretty sure of is that Oscar Wilde got it right: "Life is too important to be taken seriously." Four schools, two states, one wife and no pets or kids later, thing are pretty good—though I do think a couple of years might have been misplaced along the way. Other than still not having a satisfactory answer to the question “When are you getting out of school?”, I am living in Davis, California with my wife Brenda Mengeling, who originally hails from Oshkosh, Wisconsin. We both work as scientists for the university studying how hormones and happy meals get together to make us fat and give us diabetes. The past seven years in California have been good. Wine, mountains, oceans, San Francisco… there’s a lot to like about this place. Still, it would be good to get back closer to family, so I am currently looking for jobs as professor (still not getting out of school). The only thing scarier than me as a student might be me as a teacher.
After high school, I went to U of I, where I managed to squeeze four years into six. A good, if perhaps ill-advised, time was had by all. After Champaign, I was off to Kentucky for graduate school. That’s where I met Brenda. It was irritation at first sight (actual fact. The first time she met me, she went back to her lab and asked who that annoying person in the Sarge Lab was; to which they replied “Oh, you met Michael.”) Three short years later we wound up dating. Two more years and we were married; that was eight years ago.
Unfortunately, being two thousand miles away (and having my parents here for the weekend), we won’t be able to join the reunion festivities. Thank you to everyone who worked to organize the reunion and the website. As I look at the yearbook pictures, I wonder “Did we ever really look that young?” (and, “What was I thinking with that haircut?”).
I can only hope that the next twenty years are as good for everyone as the last twenty have been for me. Have a great reunion.
