Life and Times in 1958
After graduation from high school, life was tough when the average yearly income was just $5,087! But then when Dwight D. Eisenhower was President, a house cost only $18,640. Milk cost only 51 cents a half gallon, 10 lbs of potatoes cost 63 cents and 79 cents would bring home the bacon. Back then we could buy a loaf of bread at the grocery store for the 1958 price of 19 cents! Yes, those were the days when we listended to songs like "April Love" and "The Purple People Eater". And who could forget the enchanting melody of "Tom Dooley"? When we were glued to the television set, we watched "The Jack Benny Show", the most popular show in 1958. Remember that it was the New York Yankees over the Milwaukee Braves in the 1958 World Series?

Today's Featured Biography
Harold Bibb
Attended Lincoln Grade School
After graduating from high school in Centralia, I attended Knox College in Galesburg, Illinois as a scholarship student and earned a bachelor's degree in biology. Upon graduating from Knox, I enrolled at the University of Iowa where I was awarded the M.S. and Ph.D. degrees. After earning the PhD, I held post-doctoral fellowships from the National Institutes of Health first at the University of Victoria in British Columbia, Canada, where I met my wife Brenda Golberg. Following my tenure at the University of Victoria I held a similar fellowship at Brown University in Providence, Rhode Island. Upon the completion of my fellowship period, I accepted a faculty appointment at the University of Rhode Island in Kingston, Rhode Island, and after several years became Chair of what is now the Department of Biological Sciences.
Currently, I'm a Professor of Biological Sciences and also Associate Dean of the Graduate School here at the University of Rhode Island. In this capacity, I am responsible for the award of University Scholarships and Fellowships to graduate students, and also for overseeing the admissions process for all of the University's graduate programs. I also continue to teach in the Department of Biological Sciences. In addition to these activities, I am an advisor to the New England Board of Higher Education (NEBHE) and participate in the efforts of this group to increase the number of minority graduate students in mathematics and the sciences, and to increase the number of minority faculty members in higher education. As a result of these activities, I was selected as Mentor of the Year for the New England region of the country in 2000 and have been given the Extra Mile Award by this group. I also serve as an advisor to Harvard University's Biomedical Sciences Careers Project which seeks to increase the number of minority scientists in biology and medicine, and was named to this group's Honor Roll.
For approximately the last fifteen years I have been a member of the Board of Trustees of Knox College in Galesburg, Illinois, where I attended undergraduate school, and have served as Chair of the Education Committee for the Knox Board of Trustees.
Here in Rhode Island I am a member of the Community Advisory Panel for South County Hospital. I am also a member of the Board of two musical efforts - the Kingston Summer Music Festival which brings nationally known musicians to southern Rhode Island for a two week long summer festival, and the South County Chamber Singers with whom I sang and served as treasurer for several years.
My wife Brenda is a Principal Environmental Health and Safety Engineer for Raytheon Corporation, and is responsible for the Portsmouth, Rhode Island Raytheon installation’s compliance with state and federal health and safety regulations. Brenda and I have three children. Martha is 26; and after receiving the B.A. in Psychology from Grinnell College in Grinnell, Iowa she became a Special Education Teacher, and now teaches in Kansas City where she lives with her husband Timothy Lin. Emily is 24, and after attending Carnegie Mellon University in Pittsburgh and earning the B.A. degree at the University of Rhode Island, is now enrolled at New York University where she is working toward an M.A. degree in Museum Studies. Our son David 19 years old and is a second year student at Bates College in Lewiston, Maine.
New information for 2008 reunion.
