Today's Featured Biography
Ellen Hoffman Zellmer
After graduation from Western Illinois University in 1971, I lived in the Chicago area until I married. My husband was an advertising executive who "saved" accounts, so we moved quite a few times in the 14 years we were married which limited any type of career development for me. I then settled in the Kansas City area (where I had already lived twice before) and began work at the American Multi-Cinema, Inc. (aka AMC Theatres) headquarters working my way through several positions in the Properties Department where the leases for the theatres were administered. After 14-1/2 years there, I went to work in 2001 for Helzberg Diamonds, headquartered in North Kansas City as the Lease Administration Manager. After 3 years there I was promoted to Director of Lease Administration with 2 employees reporting to me. In this position I negotiate the non-financial aspects of a lease, make sure the document is correct before it is signed by working closely with out-of-house counsel, and administer the lease throughout its term at which point I either start the process all over again with a new lease or I plan and manage the closing of the store. You might say that it is a cradle-to-grave job! I leave the actual birthing process to the Real Estate Managers!
In 2000 I married Jim Zellmer who, at the time, was employed by TWA Airlines as an aircraft machinist. When TWA was bought by American Airlines, he was taken in as an Aviation Mechanic and began to specialize in metals. He has spent his time with American Airlines working on the skin of the plan. His last really cool project was being on the team that installed prototype winglets on an experimental Boeing 767. Once that plane took off for several months of testing, he was shifted over to winglets on a 757 which he claims in much easier since it is a smaller plane and requires quite a bit less reinforcement for the winglets. Within the next 2 months, he will be officially retired from the airline and will be staying at home for awhile. He is currently the President of The Audubon Society of Missouri which takes up quite a bit of his time and he wants to devote more time to it, something that retirement will allow him to do.
Jim came to me and my daughter, Beth, with 2 daughters -- Candice and Kate. We instantly became a family of 4 women (+ a female cat)! Candice is now 28, Beth is 27 and Kate is 25. Candice is a registered respiratory therapist, Beth is a student with nursing as her goal (she's a late bloomer), and Kate is a training manager for the Customer Service department at Harrah's here in Kansas City. We've only been blessed with 1 grandson, Jon, who is 5 and has started kindergarten. Asked how school went that day, he will reply "Fine." We didn't think the one-word responses would start quite this soon!
I keep very busy at work and there's only so much office space at home, so I've turned over all of my voluntary positions with Alpha Omicron Pi and the Burroughs Audubon Society of Greater Kansas City. I devote my time now to learning how to play the mandolin and autoharp. I enjoy all kinds of music, especially bluegrass, folk and Celtic music, and these 2 instruments allow me to play just about anything I put my mind to. I really would have liked to learn guitar but my fingers would only reach so far which made it pretty hard for me so I switched instruments. We go every year to the Walnut Valley Festival in Winfield, KS for 2 entire days of nothing but music. It's a standing vacation date for me at work. Two of the kids and Jon go with us now which makes it a lot of fun. We're working on the last one but it may be a lost cause as she's more of a "modern" girl musically. She just doesn't know what she's missing, because it isn't all old-time music at Winfield. A trip through the campgrounds would prove it to her, but she just doesn't believe us and won't go even one time to find out! Other than that, I spend my time reading (which probably doesn't surprise anyone) and doing Sudoku (now that I've figured it out, I'm not quite so frustrated!).
I'd love to hear about what the rest of you have been doing. Please register and post what's been happening in your lives.

"Just discovered your product today while trying to locate classmates ahead of our 50th reunion in 2020. The fact that you did this in a noncommercial manner in a world where everything has a price tag deserves recognition and respect, in my view.
Thank you and good luck in all your endeavors."
