I left high school at spring break in 1954 and joined the Air Force, after I had made an unauthorized "Lab-clearing" experiment which resulted in my getting kicked out of Chemistry. While in boot camp I completed the GED HS and college equivalency exams, but as the PTB at DOOP wouldn't issue a diploma for them, and as my mother really had her heart set on me graduating from OPRFHS, I enrolled in 4 correspondence courses and took the final exams which they did accept. While in the service, I attended college at the University of Virginia, the University of Maryland and Kansas City University, taking only science and math courses which met my fancy.
Upon completing my military obligation, I used the GI Bill to attended Kansas University in 1958 and 1959, taking courses ranging from "Bonehead" English to graduate level Math. I met and married Tamiko at KU in November, 1959. I then quit school again and obtained a position with IBM as a hardware engineer in Kansas City. Tamiko who had been attending KU on a Fulbright Scholarship needed to continue taking courses to preclude her being deported. We both took courses at Kansas City University (KCU) with an occasional semester off for the birth of our two daughters, June and Paula, in 1962 and 1963. In 1964 KCU was taken over by Missouri University and the GED college equivalency exams that I had taken in 1954 became 32 hours of elective credits towards a degree. With then more hours than I needed for a degree, I hastened to take 6 hours of History needed for my degree requirements and received a BS in Math and Physics from the University of Missouri at Kansas City (UMKC). IBM came forward with a position to support US military bases in the Far East which would station me in Okinawa, a location that satisfied the foreign residency requirements of the Foreign Visitor's Visa under which Tamiko had entered the USA. She finished her Master's thesis while I was being trained on specialized Department of Defense communication's equipment, and received her ME from UMKC the fall of 1964 shortly before our departure for Okinawa.
Four wonderful years in the "Poor man's Hawaii", Okinawa, followed.
