Today's Featured Biography
Janet Schafer Anderson
I have the distinction of being the youngest member of the class of '76. It didn't mean much to me all those years ago, but at this stage of my life, I'll wear my comparative "youth" as a badge of honor!
Ray and I just celebrated our 19th wedding anniversary on April 6, 2010. I am thankful for such a wonderful and godly husband! Our daughter Abigail is ten years old now and will soon be finishing fourth grade. She entered our family through adoption, and we have had her since she was two days old. Abigail has been a great blessing to us, and the Lord has taught me much through my experiences as a mother.
We now live in Mount Carmel, a southern Illinois town of 8,000 on the Wabash River. We moved here nearly seven years ago from Farmersburg, Indiana, when Ray accepted the call to pastor a small independent Baptist church in town. This is Ray's second church. Mount Carmel is a nice town, and we like it here.
I gave up outside employment a long time ago when we were attempting to start a family because of my desire to be a stay-at-home mom. Over the last fourteen years, I have been a part-time photographer, doing mostly weddings and portraits. However, moving to Mount Carmel had a detrimental effect on my word-of-mouth business, so I haven't done much photography for profit since we've been here. I have gotten into digital photography over the last several years and love Photoshopping my images on the computer. I finally went digital for my professional work a few years back, after having been film based for many years.
Most of my activities bring absolutely no money into the family coffers, but we've trained ourselves to live on a shoestring, and the Lord always provides for our needs and more.
My present (non-paying) job is as Abigail's teacher. I have come full circle, starting out in life as a public school teacher and now getting back into teaching as a home educator. Home schooling requires self-discipline and commitment, but Ray and I have felt God leading us in this direction for a long time. We have been home schooling Abigail since kindergarten and plan to continue through high school.
Since our church is so small, I'm not overwhelmed with responsibilities as a pastor's wife. Our people are very good about pitching in and sharing the work load. I do lead a ladies ministry/Bible study.
I spent thirteen years in Bible Study Fellowship, an in-depth international, interdenomenational Bible study program. I was in the Terre Haute class for ten years and the Evansville class for three years. I enjoyed being in leadership for six of those years (a great experience!). Abigail was in the pre-school children's program for five years. I had to drop out of BSF when Abigail entered first grade, but I would like to get back into it someday when she is older.
Besides photography and Bible study, my interests include reading, collecting DVDs of old movies (1930's to 1950's), Amelia Earhart (I have several biographies of her), "The Andy Griffith Show" (I'm a member of The Andy Griffith Show Rerun Watchers Club and have been to one Mayberry event), travel (which I rarely get to do), and perusing cookbooks for new recipes. I used to be more sports minded, but that fell by the wayside over the years, especially when I developed tendonitis in my shoulders.
However, I have been more diligent in exercising lately for health reasons. Last summer, at the age of fifty, I decided to seriously pursue a healthier lifestyle and, as a result, have lost a number of pounds.
I have found that my life has turned out differently than what I vaguely imagined it would be back in the spring of 1976 when I stepped out of CCHS for the last time as a student. But that's okay! Life is interesting, and God is good. My goal is to make the best use of each day and, by His grace, serve the Lord who saved me.
