Today's Featured Biography
Stephen Beasley
After leaving Butler, I spent a hard summer in Atlanta with my mother then ventured to the Mountains of West Virginia for my undergraduate education.
My experience at the University of Charleston was picture perfect. Even though I have my share of loans, because it was a private school it was well worth it.
I was involved in student government, minority involvement, community service, music, drama and kept my head above water academically. It was the time in my life that I had finally gotten the concept of what it was like to be a member of a team.
My junior year, fearing that I had gotten to confortable, with the perks of campus life. So in February of 2001, I decided to pack up my things for 6 months and move to Sydney, Australia to study for a semester abroad. It changed my life!
Returning to campus life in the fall of that year, of course the world changed. 9/11 was a wake-up call to all not only to this nation, but to each of us individually. The message was clear, this world does not revolve around you.....and it is not always your oyster.
Running toward the heat of the fire.....
Before 9/11 I had already set my goal, an MFA in performing arts management @ NYU or Brooklyn College. After being granted admission from, I went with the more economical and hands-on choice, Brooklyn College.
Life in post 9/11 NYC has already had several chapters. 2002, when I got here.... The city was clean, inviting, crime was still going down, down, down....and spirits were up, up, up.
Then the war. The effect of getting on the train and seeing men with grenade launchers, mixed with the seemingly permanent orange alert proved to be one of many emergency flashers, including family illnesses, deaths, and academic, career, academic, and personal trials.
The last two years, have been a lifetime that you can ask me about at the reunion....whenever we have it...
KASEY WHERE ARE YOU GIRRRRRL!
SO THE JUICE MANY OF YOU WANT TO KNOW ABOUT I"M SURE.............
As of now, I recently broke off a long-term relationship with my ex-partner John (also from Louisville), and am serious contemplating celibacy.....for a few reasons.
Mainly because.....I think I'm just more sociologically gay than actually gay....:-). I have great friends of all backgrounds who are behind me 100% on my decision though.
I live in West New York, New Jersey (15 mins from NYC) with my best friend from college. My days are spent being active at Emmanuel Baptist Church in Brooklyn ( I'm in 2 choirs, and the HIV/AIDS ministry), interviewing for that first big arts management job, finishing my thesis and residency for my MFA with Walk Tall Girl Productions (a publicist/group sales agent/marketer for Broadway, off Broadway and Dance), I work out about 4 times a week, and have a vibrant social life.
That's me in a nutshell. You can e-mail me @[email protected].
