Today's Featured Biography
Rita Kirsch Thieme
After graduating from Bridgewater State College I taught school for one year (a profession I was actually not suited for, as it turned out.)
Was married in 1969 to Lee Thieme of Needham and went to work at the Boston Herald Traveler. After our two sons were born in 1971 and 1974 we moved to NH where I went back to work, this time at the Manchester Union Leader.
Eventually I became Classified Ad Manager of the Nashua Telegraph, and them took a similar position at the New Bedford Standard Times (a Dow Jones Subsidiary Company in 1984). I was promoted in New Bedford to Advertising Director, and then Promotion Director. One of my projects was the marketing and promotion of a local community festival, SummerFest. The year before I took over the festival generated about 10,000 attendees. My first year the numbers jumped to over 100,000.
About 7 years ago I took a buyout. It was the right thing at the right time. I did some advertising consulting, including a stint in the former communist Albania where I taught public relations for 3 weeks to community groups and social service groups.
Moving on, I worked as a promotion writer for a software firm that sold to the newspaper industry. Just in time for the industry to go sour. My boss hired me at his new company (in the security software field) but that was likewise short lived. Amazingly at that company I ran into an old Archies graduate: Dick Carvelli of the class of 1963. He looked MUCH older than I!
So, almost 4 years ago I looked around and thought I needed to occupy myself with work that didn't require a 9-5 (or better yet, a 9-8) schedule. So I took my real estate exam and became a Realtor. My first day on the job was September 11, 2001!!!
Lee and I are still married after 36 years. Nowadays that seems like a badge of honor, I guess. We love to ski, hike, kayak, and travel among other things. We also spend a great deal of time with our two grandsons who are charming little fellows. It's so much easier being a grandparent.
About 14 years ago Lee suffered a brain injury as a result of sleep apnea. The left temporal lobe was affected, which regulates the executive functions of the brain, like organization. As a result he went from being a top software engineer who wrote the aviation system for Digital Equipment Corp. to not being able to remember his passwords. Amazingly although he cannot work, he has maintained his sense of humor and good grace.
We have a nice little condo at Loon Mountain where we can get away at a moment's notice.
We live in Upton, Mass.
