Roger Spadafora
Roger Spadafora was born 29 March 1945 and is a native of Wakefield, Massachusetts. After undergraduate music studies at New England Conservatory in Boston, Massachusetts, and graduate level studies at the University of Massachusetts, he entered the Air Force during the end of the Vietnam Conflict as a musician in the Tactical Air Command Band, Langley Air Force Base, Virginia. Following a 5-year enlistment, he entered retail in the capacity of a management internship for approx 2 years. After 2 years of additional graduate studies in Education Administration and Counseling at Hampton University and the College of William and Mary, he entered federal service in 1977.
Mr. Spadafora’s first federal position was to oversee the training of soldiers enrolled in correspondence courses at the Institute for Professional Development, Fort Eustis, Virginia. Approximately one year later, he moved to TRADOC Headquarters to participate in a two-year Department of Army internship in Educational Services at Forts Monroe and Eustis. Following placement as an educational counselor, Mr. Spadafora moved to the Aviation Logistics School at Fort Eustis and led subject matter experts in the development of soldiers manuals for Aviation Armament MOS. During the period 1982-1984, he moved back to the Institute of Professional Development and worked with the American Home Study Council and the American Council on Education evaluating correspondence courses for college credit recommendations. From 1984 thru 1998, Mr. Spadafora worked at ROTC Cadet Command, where he trained military officers how to assess leadership potential in college students; provided oversight over the English as a Second Program in Puerto Rico; functioned as the Cadet Command Safety Officer; and provided leadership to the Secretary of the Army ROTC Subcommittee. During the period 1998-2000, he moved within Cadet Command to the Resource Management Directorate to oversee all ROTC contracts and requirements administrators for Cadet Command. During 2000, he relocated to the Interservice Training Office within DCST, and facilitated the majority of Army Interservice studies for a period of 7 years.
In October 2008, Mr. Spadfora assumed responsibility for the position of Chief, Interservice Training Office and Army Interservice Training Review Organization (ITRO) Steering Committee member. Until his retirement in 2012, Mr. Spadafora was responsible for the leadership of the Interservice Training Office and managed the day to day operations and policy-making of ITRO for TRADOC G-3/5/7.
Mr. Spadafora’s responsibilities included Army Steering Committee member; lead for the ITRO Resource Committee; Army lead on the ITRO Procedures and Directives Committee; Service lead for ITRO facilitator training; and the TRADOC lead for the Civilian Exchange Program.
Mr. Spadafora’s hobbies include weight-training, landscape and architectural design, and music-making (piano). Until 2005, Mr. Spadafora frequently performed in restaurants and clubs around Williamsburg, Virginia, including the Williamsburg Inn and Lodge and Kingsmill Resort. Since the early 1970s, he has taught piano to students ranging in age from 5 to 70 years old. Mr. Spadafora lives in a restored home in downtown Hampton on an inlet of the Hampton River.
