Today's Featured Biography
Joseph Schlessinger
Murray Loew and I met in elementary school and I accompanied him to the Baltimore City spelling championships in 5th grade, where he came in second.
I went to Poly after 1½ years at 49, entering in February. After Poly I worked for 6 months at Research Institute for Advanced Study in Ruxton MD, which I mention because it led to all the rest of my jobs for 50 years.
I attended Wesleyan University, a small liberal arts school in Connecticut, majoring in Math. Then I went to UC Berkeley to get a PhD in Math. The highlights of my stay at Berkeley were meeting my future wife Elisabeth and living in Berkeley during an exceptionally exciting time. Another highlight was discovering I didn’t want an academic career, nor was I fitted for one. It took me 5 years to discover this, and then I left.
I went to work for a research institute attached to a hospital in San Francisco. My boss, a doctor, started several businesses based on what we were doing at the institute, and I joined each of them. Thus I discovered my true calling, which was starting tech-based businesses based on embedded systems. It was a perfect time and place for high tech startups.
I started my own business, based on modems, in 1979. This succeeded, then failed, but my path was set. In all I participated in 10 startups in a row over 30 years. Most failed, a few were successful, none wildly so. My best job was working for Bell Labs in the 90’s where I invented a computer telephone and pushed it all the way into production. AT&T fell apart at that point but it was a wonderful experience.
By 2009 the high tech world had changed. The business of building embedded systems had moved overseas. New startups were exclusively based on Internet software and were run by children. I got out.
I went to work for a non-profit that had us teaching algebra to elementary students at distressed schools. After 3 years the non-profit collapsed and I retired fully. Elisabeth finished her 40 years at the Oakland Schools and also retired.
By then our children were established. Dan married Kate and they started writing and performing rock operas, some of which opened in New York. They have two children and day jobs. Emily, a nurse, married Ben, an engineer, and they have two children also. Rachel, a science teacher, and her boyfriend Nicolas, an engineer, moved to San Mateo. Rachel and I have had a number of travel adventures all over the world. All three of our kids live nearby and we see and babysit for the grandkids many times a week.
We travel (see my travel blog josetravel.weebly.com) and retire-in-place. I keep my hand in engineering by building out our backyard in Berkeley.
Come visit us in Berkeley! We have plenty of room.
