Today's Featured Biography
Karen Maddox Fonseca
I've lived in Hawaii since 1972. I met my current husband, Jerel (Jerry) while working as a paralegal at a personal injury law firm. Jerry was the attorney on the case. We married in 1984 and had two children, Lauren and Michael (Mikey). Lauren is now a senior at Kamehameha Schools, a private school that admits only students of Hawaiian ancestry that qualify through academic testing. Mikey is a junior a Mid Pacific Institute, a private school in Manoa Valley. Both kids plan to attend college on the mainland, probably somewhere in California where the weather is comparable to Hawaii. My husband, Jerry, has been practicing law in Honolulu for 24 years. He started out as a prosecuting attorney and quickly moved into litigation, including personal injury, medical malpractice, product liability,as well as criminal. He opened his own practice with two other attorneys in 1987 and has been in private practice ever since. He still concentrates in personal injury and criminal law, but has recently expanded his practice to include representing parents of students with learning disabiilities and other areas of special education. Prior to 1984 I had several jobs in the medical field and insurance industry. Additionally, I was self-employed as a medical transcriptionist for several years. In 1984 I became a medical paralegal and worked on many high profile medical malpractice, product liability, and personal injury cases. By 1990, tired of the demands and long hours of a big law firm, I branched out on my own and started doing independent contract paralegal work. I also put my name on the substitute teacher list in our school district and eventually found myself teaching almost on a daily basis. I took a brief hiatus from teaching from 1995 to 1997 to work on the infamous breast implant cases for a local law firm. Since teaching seemed to be what I truly loved,in 1998 I took a specialized course to teach children with dyslexia and other learning disabilities how to read and write. The method is called Orton-Gillingham and is well known in educational circles as one of the best methods for teaching children with dyslexia and/or learning disabilites how to read, write and spell. Upon completing the course I began tutoring students and have been doing so ever since. Now that my children are getting ready to leave the nest, I find myself reminiscing quite a bit about old friends and the fond memories of high school. I figured it is about time I get in touch with the friends that helped make such fond memories.

"Just discovered your product today while trying to locate classmates ahead of our 50th reunion in 2020. The fact that you did this in a noncommercial manner in a world where everything has a price tag deserves recognition and respect, in my view.
Thank you and good luck in all your endeavors."
