After ERHS I went to NCSU in Raleigh for undergrad, then to UC Berkeley for my master's, and then back to DC to work at USDOT as a transportation engineer and urban planner for a while. Then my big life change happened when I went to serve in the Peace Corps in Latvia (former USSR). That experience was transformational! It launched my true career passion (I was a terrible engineer)... and I began studying the field of cross-cultural business and international relations. In 2000 I moved to Chicago and co-founded a boutique intercultural consultancy with mostly Fortune 100 clients working in places like India and China, though I still do some work with Peace Corps to feed my soul. We are now going strong in our sixth year. I'm so lucky to do what I love, and I also travel a good amount. Been to 30+ countries so far, though there's nothing much better than being home and enjoying Chicago.
On the personal side--I met the love of my life shortly after moving to Chicago, Anthony. He's a classically trained chef and a Cubs and Bears fan from the West side of town, with self-proclaimed 'street smarts' to balance out my suburban middle class upbringing. We got married in 2004, and are now in the process of adopting a baby girl from China. He does (almost) all the cooking--again, I'm very lucky.
My dad still lives in the DC area though the rest of my brothers and sisters are strewn about the planet. My cousin Rob Schmelzer and his brother Rich live in Colorado. I get back to DC a few times a year to visit my dad and old ERHS friends like Rachel McAtee, and too rarely, Val VanNote and Rini Sera.
I would love to hear from any and all of you... I'm loving the bios.
