Carl Glassford
To update you to the changes in our life here is our 2007 Christmas letter:
Christmas, 2007
Dear Friends and Family,
It has been a year of destinations for Peggy and Carl: Belgium, Spain, scenic rivers, and most significantly, Lake Mills Wisconsin.
Yes, we have finally moved and we are finding our new Wisconsin life everything we hoped for. We are closer to family, the lake is near, rural Wisconsin is blessedly beautiful and peaceful and Madison is only a short drive away. As I sit writing this, the sky is celebrating a burning sunset outside our windows. One thing we got which was unexpected is a very big patch of sky. In suburbia, you get very little sky---here it is wonderfully expansive. Love it!
The move has also meant finding our way to do the things we enjoy. Carl has found “Hoofers”, an organization associated with the University of Wisconsin Union. This group is divided into a number of outdoor interests. Carl, of course, is joining both sailing and canoeing groups. Peggy has already been to three classes at the Olbrich Botanic Gardens. We bought season tickets to the Madison Symphony. They play in a beautiful new auditorium, the Overture Center for the Arts.
Our first concert ironically featured Dawn Upshaw, world- renowned soprano, who grew up in Park Forest. Carl likes to say he sang with her because they both sang with the Faith Church choir. Funny she doesn’t remember him…..
The Overture Center has one of the country’s best concert organs and in true Madison participatory style, there are free hymn sings once a month. The holiday hymn sing is coming up. Carl will take twins Abby and Charlie, now 5, to accompany him and the concert organ. I’m not sure if Madison is ready for this but it is lovely to have the kids close by so Mimi and Papa can see them often.
The angst of moving went on for a very long time because our house did not sell quickly. So, what do you do when you own two homes and your finances are looking gloomy—go to Spain with the grandkids of course! And that we did—in April. We stopped in Belgium on the way for chocolate and history and brew. Great way to rest up before the high energy Spain tour. The family’s Spanish favorite was Barcelona where we had our own apartment on a narrow, winding street near the Palau de La Musica (there we saw La Traviata). Other special Barcelonan experiences---hot chocolate so thick it barely pours, the Maritime Museum, gaudy and exquisite Gaudi and the early works of Picasso at the Picasso Museum. Anna, now 11, and Sofi, 7, were the best of travelers. We are so happy that their Mom and Dad invited us to go with!
Carl’s river destinations this year included a wonderful run on Wisconsin’s Namekagon, one of the Nation’s first scenic rivers. He and his friends waxed poetic over the beauty of clear, running river and plentiful wildlife. Next up for Carl and his canoeing buddies is a winter trip to Florida’s “Thousand Islands” in February.
Our next destination is Christmas with the family. We have our own personal sledding hill so we’re hoping for snow and wonderful new Christmas memories.
Just one last destination---it is a destination for all of you---to Peggy and Carl’s new place in Wisconsin. And just so you don’t forget where to find us. Here is our new contact information:
