Today's Featured Biography
Judith Greenwald Scatoloni
This bio brings back so many memories: Hickman Grade School, Ruskin High, favorite teachers and best of friends, my father driving a car full of girls to every game the Ruskin Eagles played, the tornado disaster, a happy/sad graduation, going off with Linda Steward to our summer jobs in Yellowstone Park, the sxcitement of going to a big university, working resort jobs on the East coast during summer breaks. I used to read books and daydream of how I was going to enter the sophisticated world beyond Hick Mills.
After graduating with a history degree from K.U., I followed my New York boyfriend to Los Angeles. We married and have two children and three grandchildren. They all live very close and we are very involved in their lives--the traditional Italian family.
I started working as an Escrow Officer in Pasadena. We handled paperwork involved in closing real estate deals. It seemed a natural career for me. My parents had a real estate firm in Hickman Milss and I had held some open-houses for them. When we moved to the beach I was in real estate sales and soon realized it did not work with children's schedules.
Teaching high school was ideal. I loved the social science subjects and the skill and art of teaching. I related well to teen-agers and built a summer careet of taking students on European tours. Summer breaks gave me time to participate in archaeological digs in Spain and Yogoslavia. It was a great career.
However, I knew retirement was coming when the long evenings of paperwork affected my Type I Diabetes. After 28 yeaars, my health became more important than a teaching career.
I worked in my husband's environmental engineering company for awhile and then began to volunteer as a Docent for the Palos Verdes Art Center. We staff the art gallery exhibitions, do outreach art programs in the school and in facilities for disabled adults and offer training for classroom teachers who incorporate art in their curriculum. I stay active in the American Association of University Women and their literaure and foreign policy issues study groups. There is a great film study group that keeps me busy. A lot of activity and no papers to grade.
Some of you may remember my family. My parents retired to Foxwood Springs at Raymore. My father, Robert (Bob) Greenwald died of Parkinsoon's in 1998. He received very good care in the nursing home there. Mother, Lucille Greenwald is 92. She moved to Sun City West, outside of Phoenix, to be near my sister Sarah Matthews (1959) and her husband Dean. She still lives alone and they are a great help. Mother is very pleased that I will at the reunion and will see her best friend, Mrs. Marjorie Langford, our high school teacher/librarian.
Did I enter the sophisticated world outside Hickman Mills? I may have seen some bits and pieces of it, but looking over this bio, I see I never left the traditional values of family and community. I am glad to call Hickman Mills home.

"Just discovered your product today while trying to locate classmates ahead of our 50th reunion in 2020. The fact that you did this in a noncommercial manner in a world where everything has a price tag deserves recognition and respect, in my view.
Thank you and good luck in all your endeavors."
