Ed Baker

Ed Baker, 74, played in '55 bowl victory
After graduating from Omaha North High School in 1949, Gayford "Ed" Baker went to the University of Nebraska on a football scholarship.
But duty called. He decided to join the Army after spending a year in Lincoln.
That decision ultimately was a winner. When he returned home, Baker enrolled at Omaha University, where he played tackle. His team went undefeated in 1954 and won the Tangerine Bowl in Orlando, Fla., on Jan. 1, 1955.
Baker, who died Monday at age 74, remained close to his teammates through the years, said his wife, Carole.
"He was very easygoing and friendly," she said. "He had lots of friends."
Visitation for Baker, an Omaha native, was Wednesday. A private family service is planned.
He got a physical education degree. The National Football League's San Francisco 49ers drafted him, but a back injury he suffered on a summer job with a beer company prevented him from going pro.
Instead, he took a marketing job with Phillips Petroleum Co. in 1956 and worked there until retiring 30 years later.
Other survivors include a daughter, Lori Blessner of Omaha; sons Jeff of Elkhorn and Michael of Omaha; a brother, Howard, of Bellevue; and five grandchildren.
