Today's Featured Biography
Robert L. Morrison
Born and raised in White Plains, New York, Bob attended Cornell University on a Navy scholarship, earning an undergraduate degree in mathematics.
Following graduation, Bob spent forty months on active duty in the Navy, serving as operations officer on a destroyer escort. During that time the ship calibrated the Atlantic Missile Range, in preparation for retrieving astronauts from space.
When released from active duty, Bob joined the IBM Corporation in Washington, D.C. as a programmer. He was one of 110 people who provided the computing and tracking information for NASA’s first two manned spaceflight projects, Mercury and Gemini while based at the Goddard Space Center.
In 1964 IBM transferred Bob to Poughkeepsie, New York, to help develop the operating system for the System/360 family of mainframe computers. He thus pursued two parallel careers. One, he remained active for thirty years in the Navy Reserve, retiring in 1986 having reached the rank of Navy Captain. Among his achievements there, he was awarded the Navy Commendation Medal by the Secretary of the Navy for his work with the Office of Naval Intelligence. His main career, however, was with IBM, where for more than thirty-two years he served in managerial, staff, instructor, and technical writing positions, and was honored to be invited to IBM’s annual Corporate Recognition Event in 1970.
Bob was elected twice to five-year terms on the Spackenkill Board of Education, and is a former president of that board and of the Dutchess County School Boards Association.
Bob has traveled extensively. He enjoys math and logic problems, including the daily Sudoku puzzles. He is active with the Math and Physics Exploration, a local non-profit organization, and with two veterans’ groups, and enjoys taking classes offered by Marist College's Center for Lifetime Study.
He and his wife Anita still reside in Poughkeepsie and are fortunate to have all three of their children and their families living in nearby Westchester County.
