Patrick Farren
My life has taken me across the United States from Ohio, Michigan, Mississippi, Colorado, Washington State, and finally Annapolis, Maryland.
In late 2005, I left the U.S. for Thailand to start a foundation; Humanity Works, International, to work on sustainability issues and poverty eradication. I am based in Bangkok, Thailand and Vientiane, Laos developing projects to improve educational standards and economic development.
March 2007, I partnered with Plant A Tree Today Foundation, a UK based organization to develop sustainable bio-fuel plantations where poor farmers plant Jatropha to create fuel oil for export. 10% of the profits of the venture are placed into a fund for a micro enterprise bank supporting 1,000 families.
In June 2007, I joined a partnership to promote forest and agricultural projects in Lao P.D.R.
The company produces specialized charcoal products for export to Asian nations. The company utilizes a social enterprise model where 10% of the gross revenue is placed into a fund to develop clean water for poor villages, all-weather roads, and the construction of schools.
August 2007, partnering with Plant A Tree Today we are developing aqua-agro project for handicapped war veterans to create sustainable income for 3 villages in rural Laos.
September 2007, I was asked to head Plant-A-Tree-Today Foundation Laos. Working closely with the Prime Minister's Office we will develop reforestation models where we develop secure multi-specie forests for biodiversity. The business model utilizes village development where the village is a paid caretaker of the trees. Through our efforts we will be able to create micro- enterprise banks to further enhance the communities.
