Hobert Brabson
Area inventor peddles ‘Combo Can’
Brabson trying to interest Coke, Pepsi, packers in 2-in-1 product
By Mike Pare Staff Writer
CLEVELAND, Tenn. — Cheryl Brabson says she likes Pepsi while husband, Hobert, is a Coke man.
"I’m from the North, and he’s from the South," she said.
It is distinctions such as that one that they believe will make an invention by Mr. Brabson a must for some companies. Called the "Combo Can," it is designed to carry two different products or commodities at the same time.
Mr. Brabson, who has had his brainchild patented, said the product in its simplest form is a 12-ounce can with a divider in the middle.
If used to hold soft drinks, it would have pop-tops on each end of the can.
If it’s holding vegetables, such as corn in one end and green beans on the other, it could be the size of a standard 14- to 16-ounce can, he said.
"This is the future," said Mr. Brabson in a recent interview at his Cleveland residence as he handled a prototype of the can.
The 42-year-old man, who said he retired from Norfolk Southern Railway after 20 years of service, came up with the idea in September 1998 in a dream.
"The Lord gave it to me in a vision," he said.
In his dream, he saw Sprite in one end and Coke in the other. He said he awoke and wrote down his idea and has been developing it since.
He estimates he has spent between $16,000 and $18,000 in attorneys and other fees so far on the product. He secured a patent about a year ago.
Mr. Brabson, who recently earned a master’s degree in public administration from the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga, said he has pitched Combo Can to several companies.
He said he traveled to Colorado to meet with officials of Ball Corp., one of the world's leading suppliers of metal and plastic packaging to the beverage and food industries.
He said Ball is interested but indicated it needs a customer.
"Once I get that first one, I won’t have to sell it," said Mr. Brabson, who is working temporarily at the M&M Mars Inc. plant in Cleveland.
He said he is pursuing meetings with Coke and Pepsi.
"I think it will change the packaging industry as you know it," he said.
Mr. Brabson, originally from Knoxville but a Cleveland resident for many years, has collected a small cadre of supporters to serve as officers of the Brabson Corp. Brother Ronnie Brabson of Knoxville said Combo Can is a simple but practical concept.
"It’s a great idea for a single person like myself. It would save on food and cabinet space," he said.
When his brother shares the idea with a friend or family member, "Everyone’s eyes light up," said Ronnie Brabson.
Mrs. Brabson said she is excited by the prospects of the invention.
"I never drink a full can of soft drink. Most of the time we like different vegetables at meals. To me, it’s a lot more economical," she said.
A survey Mr. Brabson commissioned showed that 88 percent of those people polled would use the Combo Can if it were available, he said.
"Children went crazy over this. If the kids want it, Mom’s going to buy it," Mr. Brabson said.
