Today, May 13th is the anniversary of my most amazing accomplishment to date: marrying and staying married 43 years to the former Miss Betty Lu Ballard. When I took her up to Dallas to meet people who launched my brief career in opera, one said my value increased threefold. They couldn’t have meant my cash value or singing because we were penniless artists for years until we settled into our teaching and counseling careers. We taught in California but came back to Kingsville in ’73. Other mile marks: 1975 bought my first sailboat(in 2007 sold the last one). Well, I may someday sell the one I’m building. We spent summers sailing the Gulf from Vera Cruz to the Bahamas, but when we retired from her teaching at TAMUK and my counseling in Ricardo we moved to Rockport and built the dome house in ’95. I started gardening again and raising chickens (remember I was a Future Farmer), so we sold the sloop.
We still do art (Google “Betty Shamel Rockport”) and I still sing at church and with the Corpus Christi Chorale.
