Today's Featured Biography
Sheldon Massey
Since high school, in addition to Amarillo, I’ve lived in Topeka, KS (8yrs), Seattle, WA (8yrs) and Chicago, IL (4yrs). Moved back home to Amarillo in 2003 and retired June 2006.
I worked for the Santa Fe Railroad for some 27 years before leaving the company and accepting a Director’s position with a large computer software company in Seattle, WA. Loved the Pacific Northwest and probably would have moved back out there if my Mom wasn’t still with us. In 2001 the company I was working for did an IPO and handed me a silver (not quite golden) parachute and walked me to the door. I moved to Chicago, IL to accept another management position in the IT arena. In 2003 the company I was with did one of those, ya know, re-org things and I accepted yet another silver parachute and moved HOME to TEXAS. People look at me a little strange with I tell ‘em this but when I moved the first time to Kansas I took 20# of good ole Texas soil with me, put the bag under my bed and slept over Texas dirt the whole time I was gone…Kansas, Washington and Illinois.
Thanks to Dwayne Tidwell's encouragement, I started officiating football back in 1979 and have done so every since. Hoping the health and legs hold up until I can get 30 years in. I’ve officiated over a 1000 football games, which includes nearly 100 Div II and Div III games. The rest were high school games in all levels in Texas, Washington and Illinois. Really enjoy getting out on the football field and trying to keep up with 16-17 year old kids. Maybe that’s the reason I moved to Umpire, I couldn’t keep up with them. Ha!! I have also worked with the Seattle Seahawks, Chicago Bears organizations, as well as Fox Sports(as a spotter).
I had 2 kids, a son Todd (who I lost in ‘97) and a daughter, Shanna. Have 4 grandkids and yes, 1 great-grand son. Took a 5-generation picture this Christmas.
I’m divorced for some 23 years now and live with my best friend, Scooter. Scooter is a 120# Rottweiler who thinks he’s a lap dog.
I still have the black 1962 Corvette that I bought in 1978, restored in 1995. The one I drove in the Amarillo High School 100 year celebration out at Dick Bivins. I have basically 3 hobbies/things I do for fun. Photography, shooting (AR-15) and my biggest hobbies/fun is my 3 Harley’s (’57 FLH, ‘96 FXDL and ’02 Ultra Classic). Several friends and I take a couple 7500-mile trips every year. This year, in July we (9 of us) are riding down to Key West, FL. Next year the plans are to ride to the Arctic Circle, over to the East Coast, down to Florida and back home, some 15,000 miles. On a Harley that would include 2 new sets of tires and 3 oil changes. Some of my friends like to call me “Iron Butt” ‘cause I can ride 1200-1500 miles in a day just stopping for gas. Can you tell I am enjoying retirement?
