Christopher Hooper
Natives of Pasadena, TX, Chris and Kathy Hooper lived in Bon Air, VA, after being transferred to Richmond, VA, in 1984. Chris was a Technical Analyst with Virginia Power/Dominion Resources in their Nuclear Engineering Department. They were high school sweethearts, having met in the Sam Rayburn marching band and have three children: a daughter, Kimberly (1971); a son, Carl (1974-2013); and a son, Colin (1976). After retiring from Dominion Resources in 2009, Chris & Kathy relocated in their motorhome to Silver Springs, FL, for 8 years, and now live on their farm in Chiefland, FL.
Chris and Kathy also operated The Southside Virginian Publishing Company, which specialized in newsletters and quarterly magazines. In particular, they published The Southside Virginian magazine, a quarterly genealogical and historical journal with approximately 1000 subscribers in Virginia and 45 other states. Chris and Kathy also typeset the Virginia Genealogical Society Newsletter and Quarterly Magazine. They also typeset, edited, and published numerous genealogical histories, some of which were Genealogical Bestsellers.
When in high school, Chris, like most other boys that age, really wanted to ride motorcycles. His parents (like most all parents) said, “When you are out on your own and buy it yourself, you can have one, but not as long as you live in this house.” (Kathy’s parents were even more emphatic.) So, doing what most teenagers would do when faced with that situation, they traveled out of Houston to the Texas Hill Country and rented motorcycles for the day in the college town of Austin. (You could rent small motorcycles back then, before the lawyer’s took control.) What a blast that was - the freedom of riding through the hills in the clear Texas air, not to mention the thrill of doing something subversive.
After their marriage in 1967, Chris and Kathy soon purchased a used motorcycle. Since then, they have owned several motorcycles and, starting in 1977, began touring the US on two wheels. Chris and Kathy have now ridden in all 48 continental states, all but two Canadian provinces, and Mexico. Their most memorable trip was a 10,000 mile circumnavigation of the US in 1994, which carried them from Virginia to Washington, Oregon, and California (29 states in 30 days). Other memorable trips have seen them riding the Canadian Rockies, the Black Hills of South Dakota and three trips to Nova Scotia/Newfoundland.
Chris & Kathy lived fulltime in their 38’ Class A motorhome from 2005 – 2018 while in Richmond, VA and Silver Springs, FL. During that time, they traveled to Wisconsin, and most of the Eastern/Central US. In 2018, they purchased a 10 acre farm near Chiefland, FL, and are now actively developing that property.
