Today's Featured Biography
Lucinda BAILEY Burton
Short synopsis of Lucinda's life:
3 years studying physics at University of Chicago -- ran out of money and was chased out of physics by misogynistic old German professors. (I was only a teenager - I didn't know how to fight them.)
While at Chicago, met an exciting guy and married him in 1972. We moved to Iowa City and he got an art degree while I changed my major to Literature and got a BA and an MA in the three years we were there.
Went to Baltimore where I worked for Johns Hopkins and started an engineering degree in the Evening College of Johns Hopkins. After a few years Dewey left me. (We are still friends though.) I got into the community theatre scene and met many fine people, including the props carpenter from Center Stage, whom I promptly married in Dec 1979 - seven months after meeting him.
Terry finished his MFA in theatre design and started teaching at Converse College in Spartanburg, SC. I then followed him to five states in six years as money for the arts in education dried up (Thanks Ronald Reagan!) and the last hired was always the first to be let go. He quit teaching in 1986 and got a library degree. He is now the Director of the Health Sciences Library at the University of Wisconsin - Madison.
We have three charming daughters. Two are in graduate school and the third is a senior at the U of Oregon in Eugene, OR. I eventually finished my Engineering degree while Terry was employed at West Virginia University -- aerospace engineering, no less (Yes, my friends, I am a Rocket Scientist!). However, I have never worked in engineering, because shortly after we moved back to Wisconsin, I was diagnosed with breast cancer. I am fine now, other than some hormonal issues related to the drugs I have to take for 3 more years, but Terry makes enough that I don't have to work, so I don't. I got a lovely Morgan Horse for my birthday this year, and I am learning to ride. Other than that, I make Terry's household run smoothly so he doesn't have to think about anything other than his very complex job.
