Michael Lankes

REVISED 7-15-2007 NOTE NEW EMAIL

Born and raised in Flint. Lived in all parts of town. Went to Walker, Washington, Hazelton and Zimmerman. Attended McKinley Jr High my last 6 months of Jr High.

Settled down my Senior Year and surprised myself. After graduation I reported to the US Navy and served on an LST ( Long Slow Target)Landing Ship Tank. Served 6 months in the Mediterian. Worked as a "Deck Ape", nite baker, yeoman (secretary). After 1 year 9 months and 21 days got out early to start Flint Jr College.

Worked at WTAC Radio 600, Baker Shoes, almost all of the G M Plants while going to college. Married 1962-76. Moved to Detroit then Northville. 1973 moved to Grand Rapids area. Entered the insurance business and ended up with my own agency in West Michigan.

We sold our independent insurance agency in 2000. Worked with the new owners for 1 1/2 years and then time to move on.

Married in 1978 and now live in Grand Haven, Michigan. Barbara and I have 4 children and 8 grandchildren. We live on the Grand River about 3 miles from Lake Michigan.

Barbara has a custom embroidery business. I am semi-retired and do marketing consulting for a G M Dealer and Chrysler Dealer. I help Barb with her business and manage to stay busy.

I've been very active in the communiy. Now a "Life" member of the Elks. Seved in most chairs and many committees. Appointed as Assistant Nation Drug Awareness Chairman and met Mrs. Reagan in Washington D C. Currently serving as Flag Day Chairman. Was honored as "Citizens of the Year" in 2006. I become "SANTA" in December and it seems like each year I need less padding than the year before.

As a member of the American Legion I have served on the Honor Guard at Military funerals.
Michael L Lankes

Upon graduation from Central I enjoyed a few months of summer. A trip to Marquette MI in a friends ‘55 Corvette still holds fond memories for me. On August 17, 1959 I reported to the U S Navy and was assigned to the USS Talbot County LST 1153. LST stand for Long Slow Target (Landing Ship Tank) WWII variety. Got to see the world or it least the Caribbean, North Atlantic and 6 months in the Mediterranean. Did lots of painting, mopping, night baker and confidential yeoman (secretary). Got out early to attend Flint Jr. College.

In June of 1961 returned to Flint and started classes. Worked at Baker Shoes, WTAC Radio Station and many of the GM plants. Married in Nov 62 & first daughter born in Oct 63. Another daughter in Nov 67 in Detroit. Moved from Detroit to Northville to Grandville, MI.

Started my insurance career in 1969 at MSU Insurance Institute. Worked in Detroit area before moving to Grand Rapids area. Attracted away from insuranced for two years by an audio self help publisher. Sales territory everything outside of the U.S. Sure got tired of traveling. Especially during boating season in West Michigan.

Not being noted for “intelligence” I brought an independent agency. Spent over 33 years in the insurance. Since we have sold the business in 2000 and semi-retired in 2001 had to find other things to keep us busy. We like to travel and enjoy living in west Michigan.

Married in 1978 to Barb, we live on the Grand River in Grand Haven, MI. We have a blended family of 4. My daughter Lisa (Tim)lives in Luray Virginia and graduated from Western Michigan University. Leslie is studying nursing and works in an E.R. in Muskegon.. Rob drives truck and does stain glass. Shelley (Bob)lives in Holland and is a comptroller for a fire equipment company.

We have 8 grandchildren from 8 weeks old (5-2007) to 21 years old. As most of you know what a joy grandchildren are. Currently I serve as a marketing consultant for a GM dealer in Grand Haven. I help Barb with her custom embroidery business. We love to boat and have a pontoon on the Grand River. Reading, photography and listening to Doo Woop are hobbies and interests.

Staying active is my contribution back to community where I live. I have been active in the Elks for over 33 years and served in many positions. As state Drug Awareness Chairman I’ve had the chance with Barb to meet Mrs. Nancy Reagan in Washington D.C. Serving as “Santa” at the Elks is one of the great rewards working with young children. Being selected as “Citizens of the Year” 2006 was a highlight. I also serve on the “Honor Guard” for funerals with the American Legion.

Besides the joy of our family and my hobbies working on the reunion committee for the 45th Reunion has been rewarding beyond words. Hope to be involved with the 50th reunion in 2009. Talking on the free cell phone minutes and email with classmates brings back some great memories.

Besides our children and grandchildren I have another big highlight in my life. I was adopted at about 6 months old in Flint. In 1992 Barb, found my brother and sister after one phone call. We got some court records 3 years before that helped us find them. They live in the Chicago area only 205 miles away. We now get together on a regular basis and talk every weekend on the phone. It is amazing to go from being an only child to having a family and being a brother, uncle etc.

Love to hear from anyone from the good old days at Zimmerman or Central. Once a Flint Central Indian always a Flint Central Indian. Hope to see you late summer or early fall 2009 for the BIG 50th Reunion.
