Today's Featured Biography
Carolyn Wells
Does anybody remember how much fun it was to dance the Hora in high school—I think it was in Mr. Bent’s class? Or remember that Mr. Dowd wouldn’t let our student newspaper be published one day because the word “thespian” had been misspelled with a “b”? My memory of that incident, which must have occurred in the late 1950’s, recently returned because my small-town Wisconsin school board refused to allow the “Gay-Straight Alliance” to be recognized as a student organization (fortuntely, a courageous attorney agreed to represent the students, and threat of a lawsuit persuaded the school board to change the ruling). How the world changes yet stays the same. It confuses me that while I love most aspects of rural living, I’m uncomfortable with the ultra-conservative ideologies prevailing here.
My husband, Dennis Loeffler, and I bought 8 acres of an old farm eighteen years ago and share it with myriad critters including almost every species of bird in the Midwest (hummingbirds to wild turkeys to sand hill cranes). While I never had children of my own, I inherited two grown stepdaughters through Dennis and now have three rambunctious grandkids.
I’ve retired from full-time university teaching (social work), but am still in process of revising a textbook and will teach an "interim" class at the University of Wisconsin Oshkosh next January. I also sometimes present a workshop for various organizations, "Spirituality, Science and Healing." A considerable amount of double-blind research demonstrating effectiveness of "distant healing intention" has been conducted, but it tends to be ignored given our "western scientific worldview."
Dennis and I travel as much as we can afford -- mostly camping, but we toured Alaska with my sister Merritt three years ago and went to New Zealand to visit my brother Ted this spring. On that trip we also went to see some friends in Christchurch (I taught there during a sabbatical years ago) and found the situation after the February 2011 earthquake pretty scary.
Nowadays Dennis and I spend entirely too much time planting and mulching tiny county trees and weeding our garden. We go camping a couple times every summer. I’ve learned the folk harp and play at bedside at a local hospice and in a nursing home dayroom; I also volunteer at a therapeutic riding program, and help weed a nearby prairie. It’s funny, but I don’t seem to have any more free time since retirement than I ever did! I wonder how many others are having the same experience?
