Brian Higgins
I grew up in Pretoria and Durban. In 1965 I graduated from Pretoria Boy’s High School with a B-stream matric, and some 3 years later finally got the correct A-stream matric from Capital College, Pretoria that enabled me to attend Wits with a Anglo American Scholarship. As I often reflect, it took me as many years to get a A-stream matric as it took to get a B.Sc degree! In 1975 I left South Africa to study for my PhD in chemical engineering at the University of Minnesota, Minneapolis, MN. I currently live in Davis, CA with my wife Sandy and our two dogs Becky and Kodi. We have three children: Scott (32), Jack (30), and Julia(26). Sandy and I like to travel when we have time, including visits to SA. I became a US citizen in 1991.
In June 2008 I retired from UC Davis and now am Professor Emeritus of Chemical Engineering at UC Davis. Since 2008, I have been a Visiting Professor at the (i) Tokyo University of Science, (ii) University of Tokyo, (iii) Osaka University, (iv) Hanoi University of Mining and Geology, Hanoi. My principal area of research is the fluid mechanics and stability of thin film coating processes, and I am active in using computational tools such as Mathematica in my research. In 2004 I received the AICHE Tallmadge Award for outstanding contributions to coating science and technology. I have also received several teaching awards from UC Davis.
I was President of the International Society of Coating Science and Technology in 2006- 2008, and again in 2017-19.
