Today's Featured Biography

Lenny Probasco

I attended Milford Rural High School in Milford Kansas for my Freshman and Sophomore years. While attending MRHS, I lettered in basketball, track, and baseball, and served as the class president for the Sophomore Class. I did not play basketball at Southern because of a difference I had with the coach the first day of practice. I was late from picking up my little sister and taking her to my aunt’s. That was that.

I really enjoyed my two years at SHS. Joined the Key Club, Latin Club, and that Eshcabibble Pep Club (not sure of the spelling).

After SHS, I attended Western Kentucky University with Jimmy “Frog” Chapman as my roommate. Jacky Dickens was a neighbor down the hall. And we had some great times taking in the academic atmosphere.
While at Western, I gained a B.S. degree in geology, a subject of great interest to me since I earned my Geology Badge in the Boy Scouts. Growing up in the mountains of New Mexico also have a strong influence.

August, after graduating, I was hired by Louisville Gas and Electric to be a geology field supervisor and engineer. My duties included development of gas storage fields and trouble shouting the same fields, working with developers planning their underground gas and electrical systems, and speaking to clubs, organizations and companies about our projects to scrub particulates and gases from our coal burning generation plants. I also was called upon to participate in developing literature and studies about company environmental issues using my knowledge about Earth Science and Environmental Science.

Today I have 3 daughters, 8 grandchildren, 4 great grand children.

In 1972, the company that my wife work for, Tupperware, offered us the opportunity to purchase a small franchise in Cincinnati. Tupperware helped us in so many ways to get off to a good start, receiving a hugh award at the end of our first year in business. By separating our duties, Betty and I work together very well and were able in a few years to build our company to one of the larger in the business. We expanded our business from Guam to Poland. We decided to focus on a goal to reach a certain size in sales and sell our company and retire at my age of fifty. That goal was reached and Premark International, Ltd. bought us out.

Being homesick, we pulled up stakes and moved back to Louisville less than a year later. I was too young to enjoy retirement, so I went back to school at the University of Louisville and received my masters degree. I wanted to teach science for as far back in life as I could remember and went to Western with that intention. I was offered a job by Jefferson County Public Schools to teach science. I told Betty that I would only teach for about five years then we could do all the traveling that we had first planned to do. She was very patient and I continued to teach for sixteen years. It was very hard for me to retire this June because I had such a great time teaching at North Oldham High School.

I started my teaching career at Lassiter Middle School in Fairdale, Ky. After teaching there for three and a half years, I transferred to Grayson County Middle school in Leitchfield, Ky. While there I became coach of the School Academic and Future Problem Solving teams. A scoutmaster was needed in Clarkson, Ky near by so I volunteered for that position and brought the Troop 665 meetings to the middle school and the troop became a success and were invited to presenting the Stars and Stripes at school events. Six a half years passed and I transferred to North Oldham High School to be near a new grandson.
At North Oldham HS I taught many different subjects. Some of which I designed and submitted to the Site Base Council for approval and introduction into the curriculum. The subjects I taught were Physics, Earth Science, and Space; Introduction to Engineering; Meteorology; Astronomy; Environmental Science; Oceanography; and Forensic Anthropology. I developed and introduced the last five.

Though I am retired, I have no concerns now about having something to do. Already my hobbies are filling in quite well. These include fishing, boating, canoeing, model railroading, astronomy, photography, the art of painting, tricycling, traveling, dominoes, gardening, and computers.
