Today's Featured Biography
Linda TeWinkel Hughes
After high school graduation I attended Madison Area Technical College and studied Computer Operations. I was warned by a teacher that I probably would not find a job being female as most places did not want to risk having a female working with mostly males and particularly if it was a 2nd or 3rd shift position. (Fortunately he was wrong although I did loose out on one job for that very reason.) Within a month of graduating I found a job with the State of Wisconsin in what was then the Department of Industry, Labor and Human relations. They were just converting all their unemployment checks from unit record equipment (sorters, collators etc) to a computer.
I met my ‘to be’ husband in 1969 on a blind date although he was not my date. We were married in May of 1971. We build a small home on his parent’s farm. I do mean that we built it with our own hands. Our son Michael was born in August of 1973 and our daughter Kimberly was born in July of 1976. At this point I left my job with the State of Wisconsin and became a full time mom.
In 1980 I decided I wanted to go back to work. I applied for 2 jobs and could have had them both. How lucky can a person get! I accepted a job with CUNA Mutual and I am now retired. I first worked as a Computer Operator and then moved to Production Control where I scheduled everything that runs on the mainframe and servers. That’s about 13,000 jobs per day. It was challenging and ever changing. I am one of the lucky ones as I could say ‘I love my job.’ My husband is semi-retired but since he is handy with lots of things he seems to always be busy.
I spent a lot of time with my parents from about 2001 on as both had some health issues. I was determined to give back to them the support that they had always given me and I wanted to make sure I could look back and have no regrets where they were concerned. They were the best! My Mom passed away in April of 2004 and my Dad in March of 2009 (he was 93 and a Pearl Harbor Survivor). I miss them dearly.
In 2002 we started building a new house. This time we did not do all the work but we did do some of it. We moved in and had Thanksgiving 2003 in our new home. We had a lot to be thankful for.
In 2004 I became a Grandma. Kendyl was adopted from Russia. When he arrived here he weighed 16 lbs and was 16 months old and had huge, sad brown eyes. He celebrated his 14th birthday the end of June and will be a Freshman in Columbus this fall
Spare time, what there is of it, is spent quilting and reading, I am on the building committee and president of the congregation at our church also. Of course traveling is always fun. We have canoed and camped in Canada and traveled in the states, as well as cruising to the Bahamas. In 2011 I went to Holland. Did you know that ‘Te’ means ‘To’ and ‘Winkels’ are ‘Shops’ in Dutch. Now I know why I like to shop. It was fun to go and checkout my heritage.

"Just discovered your product today while trying to locate classmates ahead of our 50th reunion in 2020. The fact that you did this in a noncommercial manner in a world where everything has a price tag deserves recognition and respect, in my view.
Thank you and good luck in all your endeavors."
