Today's Featured Biography
Stephen Fremgen
My parents moved to Lago in 1944, and that is where my construction was started. My mother decided that when I left the hangar, my first flight would be in the States, so I was born in Lafayette, Indiana where her father was a professor at Purdue University.
We spent most of the time in Aruba (with a couple of side trips to Brownsville TX and to Cartagena, Colombia) and my folks left Aruba in 1968.
After high school, I attended Michigan State University for a few years and then went into the USMC. I served in several duty stations, including time in Vietnam during 1969 ad 1970.
I went back to Michigan State in 1971 and graduated with a degree in Geology in 1973. I began work for Schlumberger that year and worked in Mt. Pleasant MI, Linton IN, Mt. Vernon IL, Wooster OH and moved to Dallas TX in 1984. We liked it here, and stayed. I tell folks that I am not a Native Texan, but got here as fast as I could.
My son Christopher was born when we were in Mt. Vernon IL in 1980 and my daughter was born while we were in Wooster OH in 1982. Chris is married and has a daughter with another one on the way. (Grandchildren? ME? Where did the years go?) Sarah is working on her PhD in MicroBiology and BioChemistry at the University of Idaho and should graduate there next year.
I work as a GeoScientist (in geology and petrophysics) and retired from Schlumberger in 1998. I am a consultant now, and work for several companies in the Dallas area. The travel takes me around Texas often, and into Oklahoma, Arkansas, Louisiana and Colorado now and then. I visit a lot of oil and gas wellsites and when in the office evaluate oil and gas prospects as well as work up drillable sites for exploration and development. We need a robust domestic drilling program for our energy supply, and I try to help achieve those goals.
I like the outdoors, and own my airplane like I wanted to do since I was about 6 years old. I fly, and have flown from coast to coast, and from the Bahamas to Canada. I started flying in 1963 and that is a freedom (well, almost a religious experience) that I cherish and will continue as long as I can. I also still SCUBA dive as my misspent youth took me out to the reefs ofen in Aruba. When I go back now I find new reefs and dive spots that I had not seen before so every trip back can find me out in the water again.
Like sand through an hourglass, the years have inexorably kept moving by. I do wish they would slow down and let us enjoy the sunsets and the time outdoors more.
