Today's Featured Biography
Ramona Montoya
After high school, I thought for a long time that I would return to Alaska to live. Marriage, children, and careers
changed that plan. I went to the University of Idaho, Johns Hopkins University, and the University of Wisconsin-
Madison. I earned BS and MA degrees and tried but ended up choosing not to complete the PhD. The
education has enabled me to work in research, teaching, and the tribal environmental program. I got to conduct
a study for the Oneida Tribe of Wisconsin about their land claim in New York State and I was asked one year to
write a set of high school textbooks in environmental science; these are two projects I particularly enjoyed. I still
play the violin.
I work for my tribe as the Environment Division Manager.
It would be a challenge to visit each of my three children in one trip. Their cities are Queens, London, and San
Juan PR. I sometimes wonder why they have gravitated to the east coast and overseas. Many people from
Isleta have lived in New York and they have returned home including some of my closest relatives.
I have travelled to all but one of the 50 U.S. states; I could make it to #50 in August.
There are many things I appreciate about having lived in Alaska: the natural beauty, friends and friends’
families, salmon, and now that I am older and had a similar life experience, I appreciate my late father for being
a single parent and great provider. Teachers at East that had a lasting influence on me were Mrs Baxter and
Mrs Hoffer. I have heard that Anchorage is so different now compared to 1976. I am looking forward to the
Class Reunion.

Thank you and good luck in all your endeavors."
