Today's Featured Biography
Timothy Smith
Where to begin?
After leaving Fairbanks in '91, I embarked on a decade long "vacation" on the Big Island of Hawaii. It seemed the logical choice of destination at the time. I enjoyed my time there where I played grown-up and delved deeper into who I was and what I wanted from this life. That is a euphemism for "I drank, smoked, and partied a lot", but I'm sure you'll understand. In 1994, I went work for a publishing company as a Copy Editor for a popular travel destination magazine, where I was asked to investigate this new thing called the Internet. I ended up coding a website for them and decided that graphic design and website development was an interesting field of work, which I do to this day.
In 1998, I met my wife, Shannon (who lived in West Virginia at the time) while she was vacationing on the Island. We fell in love and fell hard. I left the Big Island in late 1998, sold everything I owned at the time, and moved to Las Vegas to work for the Winter in an attempt to make some quick money in construction. After a few months, I had enough to buy a vehicle that would take me on an adventure across the country. I had never really seen any of the Mainland U.S. and I couldn't resist seeing everything I could lay my eyes on while I drove from Las Vegas to West Virginia. I stopped in Denver, Topeka, St. Louis, Lexington, and Charleston. I saw every landmark, stadium, point of interest, and more than one or two bars. It was really fantastic.
I ended up in West Virginia, finally, and lived with Shannon and her two sons, Chris and Mykal (pronounced Michael). Unfortunately, or fortunately, depending on how you look at it, I could not find work in West Virginia, so I took a job working for an Internet development company in North Carolina. Shannon sold her home a few months later and moved to North Carolina with her son, Mykal, where we have lived ever since. Mykal just turned 18 and is now living in Virginia with his older brother and his biological father.
Shannon is truly a wonder to me; beautiful, intelligent, caring, but tough as nails. She'sthe most accommodating woman I have ever known, yet she knows enough to say no if need be. She can stop traffic with a simple glance, yet has the most innate since of modesty you can imagine. She can adapt in a conversation with almost anyone, regardless of the topic, because she possesses the talent for knowing when to contribute and when to listen. What the Hell she is doing with me astounds me on a daily basis.
We were married in 2001, and have been hot and heavy ever since. She works for an insurance acquisitions company here in town and develops commercial real estate projects for her employer. I, on the other hand, started a small Internet development and Web hosting company in 2001 and keep myself busy with website design and Internet marketing. Sounds more glamorous than it is really. I basically just sign a bunch of checks and pay a lot of bills. I do, however, still like sitting down and applying "mouse-pointer to screen" every once and a while when a new client piques my interest.
