Bobby Collins

I never meant to become so involved in an international family ministry, but I was sort of drawn into it. After 15 years of marriage, my wife left me. Then I ran into Jo Donna Jerden, my high school sweetheart, who had also been divorced recently. We got back together, picked up where we left off, and got married in 1994.

Then everything went down hill! We had lots of problems, and her 14 year old daughter, Jennifer, caused serious trouble (suicide attempt, school, boys, threats against her mom and me, etc. etc.)

In 1996, I started a local support group and class on stepparenting, using a book I'd found, just to get some support myself. I also set up a web site (www.stepcarefully.com) to see if there were anymore scared, scarred stepparents like me out there. Surprisingly, I began getting loads of emails from all around the world and our organization was born.

Today, STEP-Carefully! for Stepparents! is the largest faith-based support organization for stepfamilies in the country. Jo and I speak at churches around the south. I'm a state certified family mediator (working with families through the court system), a licensed minister to stepfamilies, a professional family coach, and (best of all) a granddad to my wonderful stepdaughter's boy, Michael Collins (born in 2000).

I've written a series of class lesson books that are used in stepparenting classes in churches. Jo and I got to travel to New York City to be guests on the Montel Williams Show to talk about stepfamilies. It has actually turned out to be quite a bit of fun!

I currently (2005) am in the process of beginning a family mediation practice in Fort Smith (www.familymediator.org). I still lead the local support group we started nearly 10 years ago. And I'm staying very busy helping stepparenting couples build stronger families.

I get to the Gulf of Mexico as often as I can (Pensacola, Destin, or Galveston are my favorites), and am really addicted to the coastal areas.

Back in 1999, after years of using Windows PCs in my writing business, I bought an Apple - and I fell in love! My iMac still runs like a top and so does the iBook I got a year later, in '00. You can often find me at Sweet Bay coffee shop in Fort Smith, or Aroma's in Van Buren on my Mac, working on newsletters, or a book, or answering emails from stepmoms and dads. I'm the guy with a neat looking blue computer, a gray beard (thanks to Jennifer), and thinning hair (thanks to dad!)
