Today's Featured Biography
John Ferguson
After graduation from BHS, I attended Cochise College for two years, which was good for me. I got through high school by being intelligent, whereas the study/learning skills I acquired at Cochise made me successful later both in school and in career. I transferred to the U of A in Tucson in June 1966, finished my BSEE and started on PhD program, but lost desire and motivation and left school in 1972 with a MSEE. I joined Mitre Corporation in Tucson, but did not like the DoD job. I left Mitre in May 1973 to join a small technically oriented service bureau in Tucson, where I learned a lot about mini-computers, which lead to joining Digital Equipment Corporation in May 1974, where I stayed for 33 years through the acquisition by Compaq and later Hewlett-Packard. It was a really good ride in the computer industry from the 70's through the 90's. I had 15 or 16 different software jobs over the years doing support, engineering, product management, business management, and program management. I became quite skilled at navigating the corporate bureaucracy to accomplish things, but the last few years I worked I became increasing weary. The salary was good, so I stayed until, HP offered an early retirement program in April 2007, that I just could not pass up. It took about one day to decide and about a year to get comfortable with retirement. I worked for Northrup-Grumman for a short time in 2008 before realizing that I needed to be doing something I really enjoyed or something that really challenged me. The job with Northrup-Grumman was neither, so I retired, again. Since official retirement, I play golf, bowl, work on my house (the old family home in Bisbee on the Vista), and build and repair golf clubs.
I left Bisbee in 1966 and spent the next several years in Tucson going to school and working. I married Kay in November 1967 and Paula arrived in May 1968. We divorced in 1972 after several years of struggle. I married Judy Hodges (from Bisbee) in December 1972. When I joined Digital in 1974, we moved to Alamogordo, NM for 18 months until moving to Phoenix. Stuart arrived in June 1976 and Dorothy in February 1978. At the end of 1978, I transferred to Massachusetts with Digital and remained in New England for the next 27 years. Judy and I divorced in 1986. I met this great lady, Leatrice, in 1992, who was also working at Digital. We decided quickly to be together and got married in August 1997, with the family growing by addition her daughter Tareyn and son Ian. We moved back to Bisbee at the end of 2005, with the plan of retiring here, and I telecommuted for 18 months before retiring from HP.
Leatrice and I have 6 grandkids so far, with one more on the way.
Dorothy: Aiden 17, Annabelle 15, Nate 13.
Stuart: Sephie 13.
Tareyn: Aisley 3, Lucas 8 mo.
Ian: expecting in October.
It was great to have grown up in Bisbee, with a stable community and family. I believe this made a big difference for me latter on.
I'm looking forward to seeing everyone in October.
